Witness the Victoria Falls from Tongabezi Lodge

You will be met at the airport and driven to your first lodge. An assortment of quirky houses and cottages dotted along the banks of the Zambezi, Tongabezi is a lodge with style, exclusivity and bucket loads of charisma. Only a short boat ride away from the heart of Victoria Falls and buzzing Livingstone town, a host of wild and wonderful activities are easily accessible. But to be totally honest, a day spent in this secluded and peaceful hideaway for a bit of R&R Zambian-style might be just what the doctor ordered…

Activities are focused on Victoria Falls and range from daredevil white-water rafting, bungee jumping and micro-light flights to serene day and sunset boat cruises, picnics on Livingstone Island and visits to Tujutane, the Tongabezi school. Guided nature and bird walks are available as are day trips to Mosi-o-Tunya National Park and Chobe on the Botswana border. And of course you can’t go wrong with a day spent in camp, practicing the forgotten art of hibernation.

Explore the South Luangwa National Park

Explore the South Luangwa National Park

Fly to the South Luangwa and stay at Nsolo, a traditional bushcamp with a compelling history. The camp is beautifully rustic with a firm focus on walking safaris. Raised on stilts, the grass chalets are set on a sweeping bend of the dry Luwi River and offer magnificent 180-degree views of the surrounding landscape. A myriad of thirsty wildlife visits the waterhole in front of camp and game viewing is nothing short of exceptional, whether you are exploring the plains on foot or watching with a G&T from the veranda.

Like its sister camp Luwi, activities at Nsolo focus on walking but with a few more roads snaking through the area driving is also possible. If in doubt try the ‘half-half’, a combination of walking and driving to give you the best of both worlds. Nsolo also offers the Return to the Wild sleepout - an exhilarating night sleeping in the open bush and truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Stay at a relaxed bush camp with a view to kill

You will be driven to Kakuli Bush Camp. One of only a handful of camps open in the Green Season, Kakuli is a relaxed and intimate oasis in area renowned for frequent sightings of the notoriously elusive leopard. Perched on a high bank, the 4 chalets all have expansive views across the Luangwa river and down to a grazing lawn where antelope congregate to nibble on the green grass. Game viewing is spectacular year round and this, combined with the encyclopaedic knowledge of the resident guides, puts Kakuli high on the list of ultimate safari hot spots.

With both drives and walking safaris on offer it’s up to you how you discover the wildlife of Kakuli but rest assured, there’s lots of it. Walking safaris leave straight from camp and can be part of a transfer to one of the sister camps in the Norman Carr circuit. Game drives are also outstanding. In the green season, boating on the river and walking safaris are the name of the game with no vehicle access.

Chinzombo Camp, the ultra stylish new kid on the block

Chinzombo Camp, the ultra stylish new kid on the block

Back in the 1970s, this shady spot on the banks of the Luangwa was Norman Carr’s green season base. Today, the ultra sleek and very stylish Chinzombo Camp has replaced the tents of old and given the area a new lease of life. Peaceful and tranquil and offering a good dose of luxury, the camp is a good option for some pre or post safari relaxation. But with 60 acres of private land on offer, a river teeming with wildlife and direct access to the National Park via boat, the game drives are exclusive, breath-taking and not to be missed.

Game drives (and walking safaris on request) are conducted in the Mfuwe sector of the park. Wildlife is prolific and sightings spectacular especially with Abes and Shaddy’s expert knowledge. Pack a picnic and head to one of the more remote corners of this vast wilderness. From December, the park bursts into full, green glory and boating down the river is possible, especially if combined with a stay at sister camp, Kakuli.
