A relaxed riverside oasis near the Victoria Falls
A relaxed riverside oasis near the Victoria Falls
You will be met at the airport and driven to Waterberry Lodge. Set amid picturesque gardens on the banks of the Zambezi with panoramic views of the shimmering water and Zimbabwe winking from the opposite bank, it’s often hard to tear yourself away. But if activity and excitement is what you’re looking for, rest assured that the efficient team at Waterberry will take care of all your Victoria Falls needs.
Activities at Waterberry are excellent and include photography workshops, nature and bird-watching walks, boat trips and sundowner cruises and guided visits to the local village and Livingstone town. What’s even better is that 2 activities per day are included in the very-reasonable price, including a visit to the Falls. The team at Waterberry can also help you organise just about any Falls activity too, from adrenaline fuelled bungee jumps to a far more restful lunch on Livingstone Island.

Acclimatise to bush-life in Zambia's claim to fame: the South Luangwa National Park
Acclimatise to bush-life in Zambia's claim to fame: the South Luangwa National Park
You will be transferred to your next lodge. Mention Flatdogs to anyone who knows Zambia well and they will nod appreciatively and tell you it’s a Luangwa institution… and they wouldn’t be wrong. Once known for camping, Flatdogs is now a comfortable and reasonably-priced lodge set in a beautiful location on the banks of the Luangwa. With a swimming pool, lots of shady trees to relax under and a fantastic a la carte restaurant, there is plenty to keep you busy in between the excellent game drives in the Mfuwe area of the park.
There are lots of options for packages at Flatdogs but activities focus on game drives and walking safaris and with enough notice, either can be added to your itinerary for a small cost if not already included. The camp is only a 5 minute drive from the park gate which takes you straight into the heart of prime game viewing territory and guaranteed fantastic sightings even with a few other vehicles around.

Discover the South Luangwa's vast spaces, abundant game and fabulous leopards
Discover the South Luangwa's vast spaces, abundant game and fabulous leopards
You will be driven from Flatdogs camp to Puku Ridge Camp. This small, remote camp pitched on a hillside overlooking a floodplain in the South Luangwa National Park offers panoramic views and opportunities to see every wildife species you've dreamed of—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and zebra, and endemic species such as Thornicroft's giraffe and Crawshay's zebra. The camp's design is eco-friendly, the tents are well-hidden, the interiors are spacious and the vistas of the floodplains make Sanctuary Puku Ridge one of the best camps for watching game from your own room.
Day and night drives, birding tours (South Luangwa is one of the world's top birding destinations, with 400-plus recorded species including 30 birds of prey), dinners and drinks in the bush and, in the fashion of Livingstone and Stanley, exploring the landscape and its creatures on a walking safari.

Danforth Lodge, Malawi's water-sporting hotspot
Danforth Lodge, Malawi's water-sporting hotspot
Life at this pretty guesthouse in Cape Maclear on the shore of Lake Malawi is all about watersports, and once you’re gliding across the shimmering lake atop a pair of water-skis (or better still, on a private yacht), we guarantee that the troubles of life will be forgotten and you’ll never want to leave. And of course, if a bit of R&R is what you’re after, hosts Michelle and Howard will ensure a sun-lounger is always waiting and an exquisite 5-star culinary creation is never far away. Malawi is, after all, famous for its remarkable hospitality.
Water babies will be very at home at Danforth; there’s a fully stocked dive centre on the beach and kayaking, tubing, sailing and snorkelling are all offered too. For those who want to stick to land, mountain biking, nature walks and trips to the village are all good fun and led by knowledgeable guides. And if none of those tickle your fancy, how about a private cruise on the magnificent Mufasa catamaran complete with champagne on ice?
