Witness the Victoria Falls from Tongabezi Lodge

You will be met at the airport and driven to your first lodge. An assortment of quirky houses and cottages dotted along the banks of the Zambezi, Tongabezi is a lodge with style, exclusivity and bucket loads of charisma. Only a short boat ride away from the heart of Victoria Falls and buzzing Livingstone town, a host of wild and wonderful activities are easily accessible. But to be totally honest, a day spent in this secluded and peaceful hideaway for a bit of R&R Zambian-style might be just what the doctor ordered…

Activities are focused on Victoria Falls and range from daredevil white-water rafting, bungee jumping and micro-light flights to serene day and sunset boat cruises, picnics on Livingstone Island and visits to Tujutane, the Tongabezi school. Guided nature and bird walks are available as are day trips to Mosi-o-Tunya National Park and Chobe on the Botswana border. And of course you can’t go wrong with a day spent in camp, practicing the forgotten art of hibernation.

Experience a barefoot safari wilderness in the South Luangwa

Next, you will be flown to your camp in the South Luangwa. A quintessential bush camp, Luwi occupies an enviable location in the heart of the South Luangwa National Park. Aside from sister camp Nsolo, Luwi is the only camp in the area and activities focus on walking through the untouched and pristine bush. With the nearby lagoon drawing animals from the surrounding plains there is never a shortage of wildlife to discover and the birdlife is an ornithologist’s dream. Quite simply, Luwi is secluded luxury at its best and a stay here is intimate and very, very exclusive.

With only a few roads looping through the area, activities focus on walking safaris through the dry Luwi riverbed and surrounding miombo woodland. Walks leave straight from camp and usually last 3 – 4 hours in the morning, ending back at Luwi or Nsolo, the next camp in the Norman Carr circuit. In the evening, walks end with a sundowner as darkness falls before meeting a vehicle and continuing on a short night drive.

Intimate luxury in the Luangwa at Mchenja Bush Camp

Boasting one of the most picturesque locations of any bush camp in the Luangwa, Mchenja is set high on the banks of the river in a shady grove of mchenja (ebony) trees from which the camp takes its name. This northern section of the park is awash with animals and daily game drives offer wonderful sightings, from the baboons swinging in the trees to the predators stalking across the plains. A stylish tented haven, Mchenja perfectly balances a little bit of luxury with a true wilderness experience.

There are big cats, buffalo and elephant aplenty in the area and game drives cover lots of ground to produce consistently excellent sightings. Walking is also possible and an amble in the ebony grove or along the river is a lovely way to discover the finer details of the bush. Walking can also be combined in a transfer if staying at one of the sister camps, accompanied by quick pit-stop for coffee and biscuits along the way.

Chinzombo Camp, the ultra stylish new kid on the block

You will be transferred by road to your next camp, Chinzombo. Back in the 1970s, this shady spot on the banks of the Luangwa was Norman Carr’s green season base. Today, the ultra sleek and very stylish Chinzombo Camp has replaced the tents of old and given the area a new lease of life. Peaceful and tranquil and offering a good dose of luxury, the camp is a good option for some pre or post safari relaxation. But with 60 acres of private land on offer, a river teeming with wildlife and direct access to the National Park via boat, the game drives are exclusive, breath-taking and not to be missed.

Game drives (and walking safaris on request) are conducted in the Mfuwe sector of the park. Wildlife is prolific and sightings spectacular especially with Abes and Shaddy’s expert knowledge. Pack a picnic and head to one of the more remote corners of this vast wilderness.

An intriguing beach hideaway with bucket loads of character

An intriguing beach hideaway with bucket loads of character

You will be chartered to your next destination by plane.

Nestled in the corner of a turquoise bay on Likoma Island, Kaya Mawa is a trendy lodge with an effortlessly relaxed, beach-chic style. From the moment you fly into the island on a five seater Cessna plane, you fall into the Malawian rhythm. Kaya Mawa feels very much part of the local island community with children and fishermen waving you a warm welcome as you drive in on the dirt roads. As implied by the local name—"Maybe Tomorrow"—relaxation is very much the order of the day in this little beach paradise.

Spend your day unwinding on the squeaky white sand, try your hand at sailing, quad bike to the local village or take a boat around the island. If you need some R&R have a massage overlooking the bay. Food is also one of the big activities of the day. In the evening, sit at the water's edge gazing at the star-lit lake. Also remember to ask Martin to shake you a "Dark Elephant" at sunset.
