Stay at this four-star inn with a unique history and fabulous views
Kigali, Rwanda's capital, is the country's cultural and economic hub, with a population of more than one million. Just 20 minutes from the airport stands a local landmark, the four-star Hotel des Mille Collines. The inspiration for the film Hotel Rwanda, the hotel has emerged from the genocide years to become one of Kigali's most popular inns. It lies on a hill, providing a calm, leafy escape from the bustle in the streets downtown. Ascend Mount Kigali on foot or by bike, dance away the night with the cool kids at different live music venues or rent a moto taxi and explore the fast way. Kigali is also big on coffee culture, so join a tour to see how the local coffee is produced or find a good street cafe and watch the crowds go by while sipping a cuppa. There are also art galleries in the city (try Ivuka and Uburanga Art Galleries).

Come face to face with gorillas at this oasis in the mists
Not only is Virunga National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s also one of the most bewitchingly beautiful national parks on the continent, home to snow-capped mountains and glistening glaciers, active volcanoes and endless jungles. And now, there’s another reason to visit; Mikeno Lodge, a luxurious hideaway in the grounds of the park’s headquarters. The terrific team of staff will do just about anything to make your stay as unforgettable as it should be. Gorilla treks are one of the main activities and they are, of course, superb in every way. The departure point for most treks is from Bukima Camp and all depart bright and early in the morning. But there’s plenty more on offer too; tours of the gorilla orphanage, park headquarters; anti-poaching units can be arranged, as can chimpanzee treks and hikes to the top of the magnificent Nyiragongo Volcano. If not, grab a pair of binos and watch the birds flit past and the monkeys play in the trees.
