Day 1

Addis Ababa

You'll be met and escorted through the airport by your English speaking guide/driver. There may be a wait at the airport to retrieve your baggage from the airport system. Transfer to the 4* Jupiter International Hotel with two superb locations in Addis Ababa’s Cazanchise area, you'll be within walking distance of the UNeca centre. The 142 rooms are spacious and comfortable with free broadband internet and multichannel satellite television. The hotel also has a steam room, fitness centre, massage, spa and sauna, a great way to relax and unwind after your long flight. Bed and breakfast.

Visitors to Ethiopia require visas. The only exceptions are nationals from Djibouti and Kenya and travellers who arrive in Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to catch a connecting flight.

You'll return to Addis Ababa on your last day when we've scheduled a half day tour of the city and the Merkato market, including visiting the National Archaeological Museum of Addis Ababa.

Day 2

Fly from Addis to Bahir Dar and visit the Blue Niles Falls before lunch. We've organised a boat trip on Ethiopia's largest water body, Lake Tana (3,600kms) stopping off to visit the island monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret (14th Century AD) and Azwa Mariam (14th Century AD).

Tonight you'll stay at the Abayminch Lodge in Bahir Dar on the shores of Lake Tana. Full board.

We've tried to include as many interesting stop off points as possible. If time allows you'll visit further monasteries but you may have to cut down on those scheduled if you spend longer than expected at some sites.

Drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar - the 17th century capital of Ethiopia. In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Castle Compound of Gondar (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the ‘Bath of Emperor Fasiladas’, the church of Quskuam Mariam (17th century AD), the Residence of Empress Mintwab, and the church of Debre Birhan Sillassie which is famous for its wall and ceiling paintings.

Stay tonight at the Goha Hotel in Gondar. Full board.

You're booked onto a morning flight to Aksum, the most ancient capital of Ethiopia followed by a sightseeing tour of the city: visit the Archaeological museum of Aksum, the famous Stele Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the church of St. Mary of Zion (believed to be the last resting place of the original Ark of the Covenant) the palace and tomb of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel (6th Century AD) and the ruined palace of the Queen of Sheba (9th Century BC).

Stay tonight at the Sabean Hotel in Aksum. Full Board.

Day 5-6

You're booked on another morning flight, this time flying to Lalibela – home of the12th century AD rock hewn churches of King Lalibela. After lunch visit the first group of churches of King Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Next day, after breakfast take a mule back ride to the hill top semi monolithic church of Asheton Maryam (13th century AD), it's worth the climb, when you reach the top the views are fabulous! After lunch visit the remaining second and the third group of the churches of Lalibela.

Check into the Roha Hotel in Lalibela, you'll stay here for 2 nights. Full board. The hotel is government-owned, in traditional Lalibela style. Set in a quiet location just outside the village.

Day 7

Fly to Addis Ababa

Fly back to Addis. You're booked on to a half-day tour of the city to include: the National Archeological Museum of Addis Ababa and Merkato - the largest open-air market in Africa. Then drive to Mt. Entoto (3,200 meters) for a panoramic view of the capital. In the evening, you're invited a farewell dinner party at one of Addis' best traditional restaurants to see the folkloric dances of the Ethiopian people and to enjoy a selection of Ethiopian dishes.

After dinner transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Note: if an extra night in Addis is required then there are hotels near to the airport which we can book for you.
