On arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by our tour manager who will welcome you and brief you on your birding activity. Nairobi – Meru National Park
After an early breakfast drive past the third largest pineapple plantation in the world owned by Delmonte firm to Meru National Park for your birding activity at Meru National Park arriving in time for lunch. Meru National park has a diverse avifauna, with over 300 species recorded. The threatened Jungle Babbler, which has a very restricted-range in central Kenya, has recently been documented, near Kindani and Nyati Camps in the south-west part of the park. Meru has one of the eight species of Kenya Mountains Endemic Bird Area and fifty-nine of the 94 Somali-Masai biome species that occur in Kenya. Regionally threatened species recorded here, include the Martial Eagle, African Finfoot (an Intra-African migrant), Pel’s Fishing-Owl, Grant’s Woodhoopoe and the Saddle-billed Stork which is known to breed in this area.

Meru National park
After an early breakfast, we head out to our second game drive come birding activities in the park. Game viewing includes elephants, hippos, lions, leopards and cheetahs. There are also some rare antelope, including the Lesser Kudu, Grevy’s zebra, duiker and dik-dik, a tiny African antelope that stands just twelve inches high and is very shy. Meru National Park also has some of Kenya’s largest herds of buffalo, along with hartebeests, giraffes and gazelles. There is also a sanctuary for the eastern black rhinos and the southern white rhinos.
Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in Meru National Park, including the Peter’s Finfoot, the Pel’s Fishing Owl, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, starlings and numerous weavers. There is also an abundance of ostriches, hornbills, secretary birds, eagles and other smaller birds. It is a good idea to carry a bird book to identify the many species you will see.

Meru National Park- Samburu National Reserves
We shall leave early for Samburu and Buffalo Springs, a very interesting destination on our Kenya Birding Tour. We shall spend time scouting for extra birds as we enjoy the local mammals, such as Leopard, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Lion, and Elephants. More birds will be expected here to add to our list. This is an amazing part of Kenya and allows for excellent dry country birding. Many of the typical North-East African dryland birds are present here and the habitat will provide a huge species list. Samburu National Park
This area is very popular with birders and specialist birding safaris. Samburu and Buffalo Springs have over 380 recorded species, with similar numbers in Shaba. Notable species recorded include arid endemics such as Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, Shining Sunbird and the Bristle Crowned Starling, many Vulturine Guinea fowl, several Hornbill species, Somali Ostrich and rare species such as the Taita Falcon, migratory Kestrels, and William’s Lark. Samburu National Park - Lake Nakuru
Leaving early, on this day we shall drive to Lake Nakuru National Park; with a possible quick stop for a site where Cape Eagle-Owls roost. We shall arrive in Nakuru, around mid-day where we shall spend the entire afternoon birding in the park. This park is famed as the birdwatchers’ paradise and indeed was the first national park in Africa to be set up with an avian conservation objective. This is indeed one of the highlight locations on our Kenya Birding Tour. Up to a million flamingos have been recorded in this park depending on their regional migration.
Most of these are Lesser Flamingos with Greater Flamingos making a smaller population. Other birds will be seen including some special species for this area and Palearctic water migrants being abundant in the right season. Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

Lake Nakuru - Lake Baringo
On this day, we shall start with more birding in Nakuru. We shall spend the better part of the morning adding any species we may have missed the previous day. In the later afternoon, we shall head for Lake Baringo, as we bird along the way. If time allows, we shall stop briefly at a roadside dam near the lake, to check for some waterfowl. Dinner and overnight at Soi Safari Lodge based on full board accommodation.

This is an important bird area and is frequently visited by specialist Birding safaris. Species of interest recorded here include Jackson’s and Hemprich’s Hornbills, Bristle Crowned Starling, and waterbirds including Goliath Heron, White-backed Duck, and African Skimmers and Darters.

Lake Baringo - Kakamega Forest
Today we leave lake Baringo and head to an isolated remnant of the equatorial rain forest that once spread over Africa from west to east. It contains an excellent representation of bird, animal, and plant species including an array of primates. Kakamega forest through Eldoret. Kakamega forest’s aviauna is rich and unusual in its composition. Two globally threatened species reside here, Chapins Flycatcher and Turners Eremomela. The aviauna is unique not only nationally but also continentally; the forest holds large populations of Black and white colobus and Red tailed monkeys among others. Kakamega Forest Birding Safari
Full day bird walk at the eastern most extension of the great tropical rain forest stretching from west Africa. This forest is renowned for its uniqueness and richness in bird life and species like, Turners Eremomela, Black billed Turaco, Great blue turaco, Cameroon Sombre Green bull, Little grey Green bull, Yellow Bellied Wattle eye, Purple-throated cuckoo, Hairy Breasted Barbet, Grey breasted Illadopsis, African Grey Parrot, Square tailed drongo and Chapins Flycatcher. Kakamega Forest - Masai Mara National Park
After breakfast, drive past Lake Victoria to the Masai Mara game reserve is a fascinating ecosystem covering 1,500sq km of Savannah, grassland, woodlands and riverine forests arriving in Masai Mara Late in the afternoon. It is inhabited by the "Big five", as well as a diversiy of other plain game and arich variety of bird life. All the Big Five are available here. Nature walks alongside a Maasai guide. Full days in the Masai, the extensive grasslands are a strong hold to the threatened, migratory Corncrake and the near threatened Jackson’s widow bird. The bush and woodlands around the reserve also hold some unique bird species, more than 450 bird species have been recorded in the Mara, including 12 species of cisticola and birds of prey. Large numbers of palaerctic migrants winter in the area including Caspian plovers and white storks. Other local and unusual birds in the Mara include Rock Cisticola, Rufous Bellied Heron, Denham’s Bustard, Black Coucal, Red Tailed chat, Pale Wren Warbler, Tabora Cisticola, Yellow Bellied Hyliota, Green-capped Eremomela and Magpie Shrike. After breakfast, you will have a final game drive in Masai Mara before coming back for breakfast and the leave for Nairobi arriving at lunch time. You will be taken to a local restaurant to have lunch before being driven to the airport to catch your scheduled flight for a safe journey home.
