You will remain in the Alpine zone today with terrain changing to scree, with very limited flora or fauna in site.

Today you can have an optional hot lunch at Barafu if you leave early in the morning and maintain a good speed. It is recommended to sleep after dinner so your food can set and body can recover as much as possible until your guides wake you for the summit attempt around Midnight or earlier for those who walk slowly. Cold temperatures at this high altitude and reduced sleep in combination with the rocky camp will make for one of the most uncomfortable camping experiences on Kilimanjaro. Rest as much as possible and prepare yourself for the mental challenge ahead.

Barafu camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka camp

You will be woken up around midnight by your guide to climb through the night. This is mainly because you need the time to try to reach the summit and still be able to descend in daylight as well as the magnificent sunrise you will see in the morning from the highest point in Africa.

The climb to Stella Point is probably the most daunting section of the Machame route, mainly because of the altitude, darkness, and many hours of walking prior to this. Determination will take you to Stella point at 5730m. From here you can continue to Uhuru Peak at 5895m passing spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that are the only residents in the Zone. At Uhuru peak you will not stay for long, our guides advise on a maximum of 10-15 minutes.

Successful attempts will allow you to enjoy what is considered the finest sunrise on earth before descending to Mweka camp for your final night on the mountain.

There are some nice places to grab a few last pictures of the summit on this trail. 5 minutes from Mweka Camp you reach a very clear divide with the forest. From the boundary of the forest to the park gate is 10km of downhill. Walking on a ridge between 2 huge gorges, giving some impressive views through gaps in the trees. The last section of the forest has an abundance of elusive monkeys but if you're lucky you may come across a few foraging in the trees.

At the park office you are presented with your certificate if you reached Stella Point (green) or better yet, the summit (gold). Then it is back to the hotel for a hot shower and big feed.
