A difficult park to visit but a rare opportunity to see roan antelope
Overall rating
1/5

The rarely visited Ruma National Park south of Kisumu has landscape reasonably typical of an East African park with grassland and acacia woodlands. It’s best known as the few places to see the rare roan antelope, and we did see a fair number of these handsome creatures, as well as zebra, Rothchild’s giraffe and ostrich. But my experience was that the few animals we saw were very skittish and soon scampered off. Clearly they were not used to encountering vehicles/people. It was also hot and humid, and the three loop roads very rough and they become impassable with black sticky mud when it rains; a four-wheel drive is essential. The park would only appeal to anyone wishing to achieve complete isolation on their safari and be prepared to be self-sufficient.
