Sabi Sand: Kruger’s Leopard Heartland

4 / 5 4 /5

Sabi Sand is one of the best places to watch wildlife in Africa. It’s also one of the most exclusive. Coming here can be an expensive undertaking, with per-person, per-night costs rarely below US$1000. But if you can afford it, it is so worth it. The lodges here begin at luxurious and climb towards the lavish, the extravagant. Sabi Sand is renowned, too, for the quality of its guides – getting a job here is the pinnacle in the industry, thanks to the exacting standards and well-earned reputation for bush knowledge and wildlife nous. And, of course, it helps that the wildlife here is outstanding. Sabi Sand is known for its leopards and rightly so. It’s not that other species are not regularly seen – all of the key species are present and in abundance. It’s just that leopards can be so difficult to see elsewhere, whereas here they’re the daily currency of life on safari.

Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve is one of the private reserves within the world-famous Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, which itself forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem with open borders to Kruger National Park. This unfenced system allows animals to roam freely across a vast, natural landscape, creating an authentic safari experience within a viable ecosystem that requires far less active management than fully fenced reserves.

Sabi Sabi offers four distinct lodges, each with its own style and atmosphere. Selati Camp is an intimate and traditional safari lodge ideal for families or those seeking a classic bush experience. Bush Lodge combines luxury with a social and relaxed vibe, featuring spacious suites and a focus on communal dining. Earth Lodge is architecturally stunning and environmentally integrated, offering modern luxury while immersing guests in the natural surroundings. Little Bush Camp is perfect for a more private, romantic getaway, with only a handful of suites
Read more tucked into the bush for maximum exclusivity. All lodges provide world-class service, gourmet meals and expert guiding.

Wildlife in Sabi Sabi is abundant and diverse. The reserve supports the Big Five, and game drives often include sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Leopards are a highlight in Sabi Sabi, as they are across all Sabi Sand reserves. Guests can also see giraffe, zebra, various antelope species, hyena, wild dog and a rich array of birdlife. Early morning and late afternoon drives are designed to maximise sightings, with guides expertly tracking animals and explaining their behaviours.
