The three-hour journey follows a bumpy, unpaved road, passing through the vibrant town of Boma N’gombe and the charming Sanya Juu village, offering glimpses of local life and a warm welcome from the natives. After completing park registration, you’ll be driven to the trailhead at 2,350m, where the rainforest unfolds in golden sunlight. Almond-brown trees glow softly, their bark flecked with amber, while lush green canopies provide shelter for playful blue monkeys. As you trek through the forest, the fresh mountain air invigorates you, and the path winds gently through mossy undergrowth, ferns, and towering trees, revealing the rich biodiversity of this tropical paradise. Day 2

As the trail ascends toward Shira Camp 1, the lush rainforest gives way to the stark beauty of the heather moorland. The dry landscape is dotted with towering lobelias, pale flora, and windswept sandy ridges. Hiking up the steep slopes onto the Shira Plateau, you are treated to breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s looming peaks, while the fiery sun sinks slowly behind Mount Meru in the west. Along the way, serene streams punctuate the trail as you descend gently to reach Shira Camp 1 (3,600m), surrounded by the quiet majesty of this highland expanse.

Day 3

You will begin the day with a delicious breakfast and trek through an exposed moorland zone. This route is less frequented, making it tranquil and largely untouched. Reaching Shira Plateau will reveal stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s peak, offering the exhilarating and magical sensation of witnessing the summit. A hot lunch will be served at Shira Camp 2 (3,810m). Your guide will lead brief excursions for acclimatization, after which you are free to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Day 4

Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp

The Lemosho Route merges with the Machame Route as you approach the dramatic Lava Tower. The gentle climb to Barranco Camp winds through stunning scenery, dotted with vibrant desert shrubs, and takes approximately 6–7 hours. Along the way, you’ll encounter Shark’s Tooth, a massive serrated rock formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago, signaling the path south toward the imposing Lava Tower (4,600m).

As you ascend, flecks of snow begin to dust the landscape, adding a magical touch to the surroundings. Descending toward Barranco Camp, the frosted slopes of the Western Breach start to emerge. The ash-colored Barranco Wall is etched with striking indentations, while olive-green foliage decorates the so-called ‘Breakfast Wall,’ creating a truly unforgettable high-altitude panorama.

Day 5

The day begins with an exciting trek up the impressive Barranco Wall, rising 200 meters high. For a short stretch, you’ll use both hands and feet to scramble upward, and once atop, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kibo’s majestic summit. The trail then winds up and down, crossing gentle streams that sparkle in the sunlight, eventually leading to the shimmering waters of the Karanga River. A delicious lunch awaits at Karanga Camp (3,930m), and the short trekking throughout the day helps your body acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 6

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The rocky zone presents a challenging uphill path, with landscapes glistening under the crystal light of the Southern Glaciers. As the trail intersects with the Mweka Route, you are treated to spectacular panoramic vistas. A steep, rock-strewn climb of about sixty minutes along the Lava Ridge leads to Barafu Camp (4,681m).

Reaching Barafu Camp marks the completion of the Southern Circuit, offering a breathtaking view of the summit rising above a sea of clouds. The campsite itself resembles an unfinished painting, blanketed in a thin layer of snow with sparse alpine vegetation. A hearty, warming meal will be served, and you are encouraged to rest in your sleeping bag in preparation for the midnight ascent to the summit.

Day 7

Barafu Camp (4700m) to Summit (5895m) then descent to Mweka Camp (3100m)

You will be awakened at 11:00 pm with a light snack and hot tea before beginning the 5 km trek to the summit, the longest and most challenging day on the 8-day Lemosho Route, lasting about 16 hours in -5°C to -10°C temperatures. The trail climbs through quiet scree fields between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers. At Stella Point (5,672m), sunrise turns the snow to gold and silver. After an hour, you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to admire the glinting ice cliffs and Mawenzi Peak. The descent leads to Barafu Camp for rest, then a 9 km hike to Mweka Camp (3,100m), passing moorlands and forest. At the campsite, enjoy a hot dinner under the Milky Way.
