Forest Camp - Shira 1 Camp
Today, the trek continues as the trail leads you out of the forest and into a sweeping savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rocks draped with lichen. You will ascend through lush rolling hills, crossing several streams along the way, before reaching the Shira Ridge and descending gently to Shira 1 Camp. From the plateau, you will enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo, and take pictures of the journey so far.

Day 3
Shira Camp 1 - Moir Hut
Shira Camp 1 - Moir Hut
After breakfast, continue your trek across the Shira Plateau, ascending to Shira Camp 2 at 3,850 meters. Here, you may meet trekkers from the Machame Route while taking in spectacular views of the valley below and Kilimanjaro’s Western Breach above. The plateau is exposed, so be prepared for strong winds and sub-zero temperatures in the early hours.
From Shira Camp 2, you will follow the trail across the Shira Caldera and along a less-traveled path toward Moir Hut. This is a long day at high altitude, and you may begin to feel the effects of altitude sickness. Monitor yourself closely, as a restful night at this elevation will significantly aid your acclimatization and improve your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 4
Moir Hut - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp
Moir Hut - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp
On day four, the trek takes you through a stark, desert-like landscape as you approach Lava Tower and the dramatic Shark’s Tooth formation at 4,600 meters. You will stop here for lunch before continuing along the Southern Circuit trail, descending to Barranco Camp at 3,900 meters. Spending the night at a similar elevation as the previous night allows your body to acclimatize effectively—a strategy of climbing high and sleeping lower that helps reduce the effects of altitude.

Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp
On day five, you will tackle the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable climb that rewards you with panoramic views of the valley below. After crossing the wall, the trail continues along rolling highland terrain and leads you to Karanga Valley, where you will rest before ascending to Barafu Camp at 4,600 meters. This camp serves as the final staging point before your summit attempt. Take the afternoon to relax, hydrate, and prepare for the challenging night ahead.

Day 6
Barafu camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka
Barafu camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka
You will wake up around 1130pm, and after breakfast, start climbing to Uhuru peak into the early morning. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. At Stella Point (5685m), you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with perhaps the most beautiful sunrise you will ever see. The time spent on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to the cold and fatigue.
You will walk back to Barafu from the summit. Here you will have a well-earned (but short) rest and collect the rest of your gear before heading down to Mweka Hut (3100m). Be sure to enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life.
