Addis Ababa - Semera - Danakil Depression

Pickup from the Hotel/apartment in Addis Ababa and transfer to the Airport and meet your specialized Afar guide and 4x4 vehicles to commence the expedition.

The journey is an adventure in itself, driving across a surreal, sun-baked plain. You'll pass the shimmering, mineral-rich waters of Lake Afdera, a vast salt lake where local Afar people harvest salt, set against a dramatic volcanic backdrop.

Arriving at the Ertale campsite in the afternoon, you'll prepare for the ascent. As the intense heat wanes, you begin the approximately 40-minute trek across the volcano's blackened basalt shield. Reaching the rim in the late afternoon is a moment of pure awe.

Before you lies Erta Ale, one of the planet's few permanent lava lakes. The sight of the churning, incandescent magma in its caldera is an unforgettable, primordial spectacle. You will spend the evening on the summit, witnessing the lake's hypnotic activity intensify under the starry desert sky—a truly unparalleled experience.

Ertale Volcano - Dalol

After an early breakfast at the campsite, we begin our drive across the otherworldly Danakil Depression. Our first stop is Lake Asebo, the primary salt mining area. Here, you will witness the ancient, back-breaking work of the Afar salt miners as they break the thick salt crust into large rectangular slabs, which are then loaded onto camel caravans for their long journey to the highlands.

We then continue to Dallol, a place that feels like another planet. Situated over 130 meters below sea level, it is one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth. An excursion on foot will lead you through an impossible landscape of neon-yellow, green, and orange hydrothermal fields, bizarre sulfur formations, and bubbling acidic ponds—a breathtaking display of geological forces.

The day concludes with a visit to the vast, crystalline salt pans of Lake Assal before we set up our basic camping facilities for the night in the heart of this extraordinary desert, under an immense canopy of stars.

Dalol - Gheralta

We begin before dawn, driving across the salt flats to witness a spectacular sunrise over the Dallol hydrothermal field. The low morning light ignites the vibrant mineral deposits—neon yellows, emerald greens, rust-reds, and electric blues—creating an unforgettable photographic moment and a poetic farewell to this alien, otherworldly landscape. After returning to camp for a hearty breakfast, we commence our long but fascinating drive westward, ascending dramatically from the searing, sun-blasted lowlands of the Danakil Depression into the cool, refreshing highlands of Tigray. The journey continues toward Hawzien, winding through the dramatic mountain gorges of Gheralta, where sheer cliffs and ancient rock-hewn churches seem to hang impossibly from the sky. After days of rugged expedition in one of the harshest environments on Earth, we finally settle for a well-deserved overnight stay at Gheralta Lodge or a similar standard, where comfort meets breathtaking views.

Full Day Tigray Church Exploration

We rise early and drive into the Gheralta massif, a landscape of towering sandstone pinnacles. Our first stop is Abrha wa Atsbah, a modest but ancient church tucked into a cliff hollow, its faded frescoes telling stories of saints and kings. Next, we ascend steeply to Daniel Korkor, perched high on a narrow ledge—the climb involves scrambling over bare rock and squeezing through fissures, but the panoramic views over the valley are worth every heartbeat. Inside, we find soaring arches and vibrant murals. The day’s crown jewel is Abune Yemata, reached by a nerve-testing climb up sheer rock faces, gripping handholds worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims. The reward: a small, domed sanctuary with exquisite 15th-century paintings, suspended between earth and sky. We linger, absorbing the silence and the sheer faith that carved these churches from stone. As the sun softens the cliffs into gold and crimson, we descend and drive back to Gheralta Lodge, where a warm meal and a cool breeze await.

Gheralta - Axum

Early morning pickup from theLodge, we drive north toward the ancient heart of Axum. Our first stop is Debre Damo Monastery, a remarkable sixth-century site perched atop a sheer flat-topped mountain. Access is only by climbing a leather rope—a thrilling and humbling ascent—where we explore the intact church and its rare collection of manuscripts and relics, all preserved within the tranquil cliff-top compound. Descending, we continue to Yeha Temple, the oldest standing structure in Ethiopia, dating back over 2,500 years. This grand pre-Axumite temple, with its massive stone blocks perfectly fitted without mortar, stands as a silent testament to a forgotten civilization. We wander among its ruins, imagining the rituals once held here. As the afternoon light softens, we drive into Axum, the legendary city of the Queen of Sheba. We check into our overnight accommodation, surrounded by the mystique of towering stelae and ancient tombs, ready to explore further tomorrow.

After breakfast, we pick you up from your hotel in Axum and embark on a final tour of this ancient city—visiting the towering stelae, the tomb of King Kaleb, and the legendary chapel said to house the Ark of the Covenant. With rich history absorbed, we transfer to Axum Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, our support vehicle greets you, and we offer optional souvenir shopping—a chance to take home Ethiopian coffee, textiles, or crosses. In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner, celebrating the end of your six-day journey through fire, salt, and stone.
