Arusha to Marangu Gate then to Mandara Hut
Your adventure starts with a scenic drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate, where you will complete registration and final preparations before beginning your climb. From the gate, the well-marked trail leads you steadily through dense rainforest on Mount Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, alive with towering trees, vibrant plants, and abundant wildlife. Look for playful blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and colorful birds as you hike.
Leken Adventure
After about 4 to 5 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled in a lush forest clearing. Here you’ll rest in wooden A-frame huts with solar lighting and shared facilities.
Climbing Kilimanjaro
A short optional walk to Maundi Crater rewards you with wide panoramic views over northern Tanzania and even into Kenya on clear days.
Throughout the hike, your experienced guide will enrich the experience with insights into the mountain’s history, ecosystems, and cultural significance, making your climb both enjoyable and memorable.
Day 2
Mandara Hut upto Horombo Hut
Mandara Hut upto Horombo Hut
You will wake early for a full day of trekking as your climb continues through Mount Kilimanjaro’s changing landscapes. The trail starts in dense rainforest and slowly opens into the heath and moorland zone, where trees thin out and low shrubs, heather, and giant lobelia dominate the terrain. As you gain altitude, the air becomes cooler and crisper, and on clear days you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi, two of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones standing proudly on the horizon.
Higher up, it’s common to begin feeling the effects of thin air and elevation, so it’s important to keep a steady pace, drink plenty of water, and listen to your body. Altitude acclimatization is crucial to help your body adjust gradually as oxygen levels decrease.
By late afternoon you will reach Horombo Hut, perched at about 3,720 m on a windswept plateau surrounded by moorland vegetation. Relax, refuel, and prepare for the next stage of your climb toward the summit.
Day 3
Horombo Through Kibo Hut
Horombo Through Kibo Hut
Today marks a major step in your Kilimanjaro journey as you trek from Horombo Hut toward Kibo Hut, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Leaving the moorland behind, the trail climbs steadily into the alpine desert; a stark, dramatic landscape of rocky ground and sparse vegetation that feels both otherworldly and inspiring. You will cross the vast “Saddle” between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo, with the summit towering ever closer ahead.
As you gain nearly 1,000 meters in elevation, the air becomes thinner and cooler, and every step demands steady pacing and focus. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, situated at around 4,700 meters above sea level on the lower slopes of the volcanic cone.
At Kibo Hut, you will find basic stone-built dormitories and shared facilities where climbers rest, eat, and prepare for the challenging midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak, the “Roof of Africa.”.

Day 4
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak Horombo Hut
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak Horombo Hut
Just after midnight your summit day begins when your guides gently wake you with a warm drink and a light snack to fuel the long climb ahead. Around 12:00 a.m., you set off in complete darkness, headlamps guiding you up steep volcanic scree toward the crater rim.
For the next 5–6 hours, you will trek steadily breathing thin air and navigating rugged terrain in the alpine desert.
Around dawn, you will reach Stella Point or Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, a major milestone offering your first glimpses of the sun illuminating snow-capped peaks and the vast African plains below.
From here, an additional 1–2-hour push along the rim brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. At sunrise, the panoramic views are breathtaking.
After celebrating and taking photos at Uhuru Peak, your journey continues with a long descent. You will retrace your steps down to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments before making your way further down to Horombo Hut.

Horombo to Marangu Gate then Arusha
This final day is about descending and celebrating your success. After breakfast you will trek downhill from Horombo Hut through moorland and lush rainforest back to Marangu Gate, covering roughly 18–20 km in 5–7 hours. Though easier than summit day, it’s still long, so enjoy the changing scenery and take your time.
At Marangu Gate, you’ll sign out of Kilimanjaro National Park and receive your official summit certificate; a proud reminder of reaching the Roof of Africa.
