Northern Serengeti is also known for its strong leopard population along riverine trees and rocky outcrops, as well as ancient Nile crocodiles that dominate the waterways. This area is known for its high density of big cats, especially lions that have established long-term territories, offering exceptional predator sightings in the varied habitats of kopjes, plains, and river lines. Wildlife behaviour changes as landscapes transition, from open savannah to woodland corridors, often revealing the Big Five. After lunch, depart Serengeti and ascend toward the Ngorongoro Highlands, a scenic journey that few itineraries fully highlight. The drive passes through cooler climates, Maasai homelands, volcanic highlands, and fertile farmlands, offering a cultural and geographical contrast to the plains below. The crater offers exceptional game viewing in a compact area, including large herds of buffalo, elephants with impressive tusks, hippos, and one of the highest densities of lions in Africa. It is also among the few places where the critically endangered black rhino can be reliably spotted. Scenic lakes attract flamingos and diverse birdlife, while open plains and forested sections reveal contrasting habitats within a single drive.
