Day 1

Nairobi - Isiolo

Nairobi - Isiolo

Depart Nairobi early morning (7:00 AM) in your 4×4 safari van, heading north through the fertile highlands. The skyline of Mount Kenya follows you as you pass Nanyuki — stop briefly at the equator monument for a photo. Continue north as the landscape shifts from highland green to open acacia scrub. A warm lunch stop in Isiolo town precedes check-in at your lodge. Afternoon orientation walk through the vibrant market, where Borana, Somali, and Meru traders converge. Dinner and an early night ahead of the long road north tomorrow.

Isiolo - Archer's post

Early breakfast before the drive north to Archers Post on the Ewaso Ng'iro River — the landscape transforms dramatically into semi-arid scrub punctuated by termite mounds and doum palms. Enter Samburu National Reserve and begin your first game drive. Samburu harbours species found nowhere else in Kenya — the Samburu Special Five. The Ewaso River sustains extraordinary concentrations of elephant and crocodile. Afternoon drive along the riverine circuit as the light turns golden. Fireside dinner at camp under a sky blazing with stars.

Full Day Samburu NR

A full day immersed in one of Africa's most rewarding and least-crowded reserves. Dawn drive at 6:00 AM when lion and leopard are most active — the fig trees along the river are favoured leopard haunts. Return for a hot breakfast then a relaxed mid-morning at camp as elephants visit the waterhole. Afternoon: a private Samburu cultural village visit — warriors in ochre and beaded ornaments demonstrate traditional dances and archery; women's beading cooperatives sell handcrafted jewellery. Evening game drive targeting cheetah on the open plains south of Archers Post. Sundowners in the bush.

Day 4

Samburu - Maralal

Samburu - Maralal

One last dawn drive in Samburu — often the most productive session as guides track overnight predator movement. Return for breakfast, check out, and depart north-west into the highlands toward Maralal. The road climbs steadily through increasingly dramatic terrain — cedar and podocarpus forest replaces scrub as altitude rises to nearly 2,000m. Arrive Maralal by mid-afternoon; check into your lodge on the plateau. Short afternoon drive in Maralal Wildlife Sanctuary — habituated leopard are regularly encountered close to town.

Maralal Full Day

Maralal Full Day

A slower, deeply immersive day on the Leroghi Plateau. Morning birdwatching walk in the cedar forest with a local naturalist — African crowned eagle, Ayres's hawk-eagle, and Abyssinian ground hornbill have all been recorded here. Mid-morning visit to the Maralal camel market, one of the most atmospheric weekly markets in East Africa, where Samburu and Rendille herders trade livestock and goods. After lunch, a one-hour camel trek across the plateau with panoramic views over the Great Rift Valley escarpment toward the Ndoto Mountains. Evening at leisure; farewell dinner at the lodge as zebra graze on the lawn at dusk.

Maralal - Nairobi

Rise for a final sunrise walk around the Maralal sanctuary perimeter, spotting fresh tracks and early birds. Breakfast, then pack and depart south on the long scenic return to Nairobi. The descent from the Leroghi Plateau is spectacular — a broad panorama of the central highlands unfolds as you drop through forest to open highland farmland. Lunch stop at Nanyuki on the equator, with time for souvenir shopping and a last look at Mount Kenya. Continue south arriving in Nairobi by late afternoon. Drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
