Depart Addis Ababa at 6:00 AM and drive south through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Ziway, one of Ethiopia's top birdwatching destinations. Explore the lakeshore and wetlands, home to abundant waterbirds and migratory species. Likely sightings include African Fish Eagle, Great White Pelican, Pink-backed Pelican, Saddle-billed Stork, Marabou Stork, African Spoonbill, Sacred Ibis, Pied Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, Black-winged Lovebird and Yellow-fronted Parrot. Leave before sunrise for Abijata-Shalla National Park, one of Ethiopia's finest birding hotspots. Explore alkaline lakes, wetlands and acacia woodland while enjoying a picnic breakfast. Possible sightings include Greater and Lesser Flamingos, African Jacana, Black Crake, Great White Pelican, Goliath Heron, Purple Heron, Hamerkop, African Pygmy Goose, White-backed Duck and numerous waders.
