Day 1

Welcome to Victoria Falls, Livingstone

Welcome to Victoria Falls, Livingstone

Your adventure begins with a flight from Johannesburg to Livingstone, Zambia, where a private road transfer will bring you to the David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa. This comfortable hotel blends perfectly into the lush surrounds of the Zambezi River bank, just 5km from the Victoria Falls. All rooms are river-facing, so you can enjoy the very view that once captivated the intrepid explorer and missionary who was the first European to witness the Falls (after whom the hotel is named). This evening, step aboard the Lady Livingstone — the hotel's own beautiful boat moored alongside the lodge — for the quintessential Victoria Falls sundowner cruise on the mighty Zambezi. Welcome to Zambia.

The Victoria Falls Up Close

This morning, explore the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls on a shared guided tour — offering some of the most dramatic viewpoints anywhere along the gorge. Drenched in spray from "the smoke that thunders," this is an experience that never loses its power. In the afternoon, visit the David Livingstone Museum — one of Zambia's most celebrated cultural institutions and a fascinating window into the life and remarkable journeys of the great explorer whose name this town bears.

Into the Birthplace of Walking Safaris

A private road transfer takes you to Livingstone Airport, where you board your Proflight connection via Lusaka to Mfuwe — the gateway to the South Luangwa National Park, widely regarded as one of Africa's premier wildlife destinations and the birthplace of the walking safari. A shared road transfer delivers you to Mfuwe Lodge — set inside the park beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, with its chalets arranged around two lagoons where an endless stream of wildlife keeps guests enthralled from the open deck or the swimming pool.

Dawn Drives & Golden Light

Dawn Drives & Golden Light

Rise before dawn for an early morning game drive through the park, tracking the night's activity in the soft golden light. The Luangwa's diversity is extraordinary — elephant, hippo, crocodile, wild dog, and an abundance of birdlife all share this river system. Return for brunch and a midday rest before heading back out in the late afternoon, when the animals return to movement and the light turns everything amber. Walking safaris are included here — a guide and armed scout will lead you through the bush on foot, reading tracks, identifying birds by call, and bringing the smaller details of the ecosystem vividly to life.

A Final Day Among Mfuwe's Wildlife

A Final Day Among Mfuwe's Wildlife

An early game drive as the night lifts — lions, elephants, the river catching the first light. Back for a leisurely breakfast on the deck before the heat sets in and the pace slows to something altogether more agreeable. A dip in the pool, a book in the shade, the lagoon doing all the entertainment. As the afternoon cools, lace up for a guided walking safari — tracking, birding, and reading the bush at ground level with an expert guide and armed scout. Then out again at dusk for an evening drive across the floodplains as the nocturnal world begins to stir.

A Meander on the Luangwa River

A final morning at Mfuwe before a shared game transfer takes you to Nkwali Camp — your home for the next three nights, situated on the banks of the Luangwa River on a magnificent meander, overlooking the National Park. Located on Robin Pope Safaris' private land outside the park, Nkwali offers a private game viewing area behind camp as well as exclusive access into the park — either by boat or across the pontoon. Six chalets with bamboo-woven walls, thatch roofs and open-air en-suite bathrooms open onto magnificent views of the river. Understated elegance, seclusion and superb service from the very first evening.

Nkwali Safari Day

The beauty of Nkwali is the variety it offers. Morning and evening game drives venture into the park via pontoon crossing — a wonderfully theatrical way to begin the day. Walking safaris are included and highly recommended; the guides here are among the best in Zambia, and the private concession land makes for exceptional on-foot exploration. Afternoons can be spent watching the river from the open chalets, listening to the hippos and keeping an eye out for the elephants that frequently wander through camp.

A Final Day on the Luangwa River

Out early by pontoon as the mist lifts off the river — the Luangwa at its most atmospheric. Morning game drive, midday at ease on the deck with the river for company, then an afternoon walking safari through the private concession before an evening drive as the sun goes down. Back to camp for dinner under the stars, the hippos holding court as ever.
