Fly to Lalibela and Explore the Rock hewn Churches
In the morning, after breakfast, we will visit the first cluster of rock-hewn churches in the afternoon. Lalibela, often called the “New Jerusalem,” is believed to have been constructed around 800 years ago by King Lalibela. Although it was once his capital city, today Lalibela is a small village. While rock-carved churches exist in other parts of the world, those in Ethiopia are especially remarkable. Typically, they were excavated by cutting away all sides of a rectangle, leaving a massive block of granite isolated in the center. This block was then carefully shaped and hollowed, both inside and out. The carvings display extraordinary craftsmanship, and the churches have been recognized as one of the wonders of the world. Each church features a distinct architectural style, and all are superbly carved.
