Day 1
Machame gate to machame camp
Machame gate to machame camp
After breakfast, your guide and mountain support crew will meet you at your accommodation and drive you to Machame gate at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro (1,800m). There you will acquire climbing permits and register with the search and rescue service. Once those formalities have been completed, you will begin your trek to Machame Camp (3,010m). The trek covers 11km and has a duration between 4 - 6 hours. The route mainly consists of rainforest vegetation, so showers are very possible and you might want to consider taking your rain gear. You will stop about halfway through the trek to take lunch in the forest before continuing to climb. The gradient becomes gentler as the forest slowly merges into a giant heather close to camp where you might get your first look at the glaciated dome of Kibo Peak if the evening clouds permit.

You will camp near Shira Cave which has some of the most stunning views on Kilimanjaro: the huge volcanic cone of Kibo, the spectacular rock formations of Shira plateau, and the peak of Mt. Meru floating across the clouds in the distance. Once you reach camp, you will rest and take lunch. Afterwards, you will go on a brief acclimatization hike (1 - 2 hours) with a 300m gain in altitude before returning to camp where you will be served a hot dinner.
