After an early breakfast, drive to the Kinigi Park headquarters for registration and a briefing from the park rangers. Trekking runs only once per day in the morning and you must arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM for a safety briefing and group assignment. From there, a short 15-minute drive takes you to the trail edge.
Trek through the lush vegetation of the Virunga Mountains in search of the mountain gorillas. The hike may take a few hours or longer, depending on the location of the family and the terrain.
Once the gorillas are found, you leave your bags/walking sticks behind and approach with just your camera. Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Today you'll wake up early and enjoy breakfast, or take a packed breakfast if required, before proceeding to Uwinka Nyungwe reception centre. Meet the ranger guides for a briefing before entering the ancient montane rainforest in search of a habituated chimpanzee community.
Rangers follow vocalizations, fresh footprints, and abandoned night nests. Walks can last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on how far the troops have traveled. Once the chimpanzees are located, observe their behaviour as they forage, climb, communicate, and move through the forest canopy. You may also encounter other primates and forest birds during the trek.
After the experience, return to your lodge to relax and enjoy the surrounding rainforest scenery. If timing and energy permit, you may arrange an optional visit to the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway, subject to availability and suitable scheduling.
