Addis Ababa to Awash National Park

Depart Addis Ababa early in the morning and drive east toward Awash National Park, passing through the scenic Rift Valley landscape. Arrive by afternoon and embark on a game drive through the park’s acacia woodlands and grassland plains to spot Beisa oryx, Soemmerring's gazelle, warthogs, and an incredible variety of birdlife. In the late afternoon, visit the stunning Awash Falls where the Awash River plunges into a deep gorge, and relax at your lodge in the evening.

Enjoy an early morning breakfast before continuing your journey eastward toward the historic walled city of Harar. Drive through the changing landscapes of eastern Ethiopia, descending into the vibrant city of Dire Dawa and winding up into the Harar highlands. Arrive in the late afternoon and settle into your hotel, resting up for your deep dive into Harar's unique Islamic heritage the following day.

Harar – Walled City Exploration & Cultural Sights

Spend the full day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed walled city of Harar (Jugol). Wander through the vibrant, narrow alleyways lined with traditional Harari houses, colorful markets, and numerous historic mosques and shrines. Visit the Arthur Rimbaud Museum, traditional Harari dwelling museums, and experience the lively atmosphere of the local basket markets and coffee stalls.

Harar – Hyena Feeding Experience & Coffee Plantations

In the morning, visit the surrounding countryside to explore traditional coffee farms and learn about Harar's famous world-class coffee production. Return to the city for free time to pick up unique handcrafted souvenirs, silver jewelry, and woven baskets. As night falls, experience Harar's famous, centuries-old tradition: visiting the outdoor "Hyena Man," where wild hyenas are hand-fed meat just outside the ancient city walls.
