Day 1

You’ll be welcomed by our local representative at Victoria Falls airport and transferred the short distance to Victoria Falls town. After checking in, we’ll have time to see some of the local sights that Vic Falls is famous for. In the evening we’ll meet up for a briefing overlooking the gorge to hear about what we have in store for the rest of our journey.

Day 2

We have a full day in Vic Falls to explore a bit more before we head out. But we’ll be doing it by bike. A relaxed way to warm up the legs and see all the sights. In the afternoon there will be time to spare for any other activities your heart desires.

Day 3

Deka Zambezi

Deka Zambezi

We set out early for our first traversing day. We’ll leave Vic Falls, turning east onto the gravel roads that we’ll get to know so well. Traveling through local villages gives us a true sense of life along the Zambezi. As the villages become smaller, we head further into the valleys feeding the Zambezi. We turn down one of the valleys and make our way to the lesser known reaches of the Batoka Gorge for the evening.

Day 4

Mlibizi

Mlibizi

Another longer day takes us along the meandering gravel roads as we head for the southern reaches of Lake Kariba. The Zambezi feeding this giant in a dry landscape is a marvel to experience. We’ll spend the night on the lake shores in a quiet fishing village and have the chance to sample the local produce the lake produces.

Day 5

Lake Kariba

After our 2 longest days have brought us to the lake, we have a day off the bikes. But this is no ordinary transfer. The “sealion” is our voyage across the lake with our bikes below deck. We’ll relax on the deck as we watch the vast shoreline pass us by. A truly unique sundowner in the middle of the lake welcomes the cool evening spent aboard.

Day 6

Tamarind

Tamarind

We’ll watch the sunrise over Lake Kariba just before we arrive at Kariba Town harbour. We’ll say goodbye to the boat as we make our way for the border crossing into Zambia. Once through, we’ll get our first experience of the wonderful Zambian people. Through a few villages and across the main road and we’ll head back down to the river. The lake has changed the lower reaches and the river widens, giving it a new characteristic for the rest of our journey.

Day 7

Lower Zambezi

Lower Zambezi

Today is a wonderful combination of small farms and villages, and the wild river lying just beyond. As we weave through the landscape, we go through the bustling town of Chirundu. But this is not our destination as we continue on the equally wild Kafue River. The river is also bustling, but with hippos and crops. Tonight we’ll finally be alongside the wide lower reaches of the Zambezi.

Day 8

Lower Zambezi Island

Lower Zambezi Island

As we skirt along the narrow but deep Kafue River, we’ll keep our eye out for our crossing point. We’ll use a pont used by the local fisherman to get to the other side. We continue along hippo paths through the villages as we head deeper towards the national park. The ride ends at the river, but todays adventure is just beginning. A scenic boat ride takes us to our private island campsite in the middle of the Zambezi for an unforgettable night.

Day 9

Lower Zambezi

As we wake up alongside the Lower Zambezi, we don’t have to worry about tired legs. Today is all about enjoying this magical landscape. Our boat takes us to the Lower Zambezi National Park for a game drive and our chance to see the elusive lions and leopards of the valley. Our boats will then take us back as we soak up the setting sun on our final night alongside the river.

We’ll enjoy a final coffee as the sun rises over the river before it’s time to head home. A short trip takes us to the town of Chirundu before heading up the escarpment and on to Lusaka.
