A visit to the crater is a major draw for tourists coming to Tanzania and is considered a world-class attraction. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is home to the Ngorongoro Crater, which formed about 2.5 million years ago when a volcanic mountain collapsed due to inactivity. The crater has since evolved into a unique and integral part of Tanzania’s ecosystem. Technically a caldera, the crater measures 22.5 km across, and the rim walls rise 600 meters high. Views from within and from the rim are breathtaking. The crater is home to around 30,000 animals and a wide variety of birds.
