Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from Mbale Town for a scenic drive to Sine Camp, the trailhead for your Mount Elgon trek. After a short briefing and final gear check, begin your hike along a beautiful trail that follows the Dirigana River. Cross a dramatic bridge beneath the stunning 61-meter Nabunyifu Falls, then ascend gradually through lush montane forest. Stop for a riverside lunch at a peaceful bend in the river before continuing to Sasa River Camp.

Day 2

Hike to Mude Cave Camp (3, 472 metres)

Hike to Mude Cave Camp (3, 472 metres)

After breakfast, set off from Sasa River Camp and continue climbing through the higher levels of the montane forest, rich with diverse bird species. Enter the bamboo zone, where the lower sections have seen human impact, but the upper areas are regenerating well. Around 3, 250m, the landscape transitions into the Heath Zone, with rolling grassy hills, Giant Groundsel, Giant Heather, and colorful wildflowers (most prolific from July to September, though present year-round).
Arrive at Mude Cave Camp, nestled in a forest of Giant Heather trees with views across the valley. You may spot mountain hares or even the elusive serval cat (Leptailurus serval). Optionally, take an afternoon walk to Dirigana Falls, a 3 km trail each way.

Day 3

Summit wagagai peak (4, 321m) & Descend to Hunwicks Camp

Summit wagagai peak (4, 321m) & Descend to Hunwicks Camp

Start early for the summit push to Wagagai Peak, the highest point of Mount Elgon at 4, 321 metres. The route passes notable landmarks like Jackson’s Pool (Sera’s Pool) and Masaba Summit, both significant in the cultural history of the Bamasaba (Gisu) people. After taking in the incredible views from the summit, descend along a scenic loop trail leading to Hunwick’s Camp for the night.

Day 4

Descend to Basecamp

Descend to Basecamp

After breakfast, make a short ascent before beginning your descent along the Dirigana River, retracing parts of your Day 1 route. Pass a series of rapids and small waterfalls as you make your way down past Nabunyifu Falls and return to Elgon Trekking Services Basecamp, marking the end of your trek then transfer to Mbale town.
