The adventure begins at Umbwe Gate, where the air is warm and rich with the scents of banana and coffee plantations. The trail wastes no time, it climbs steeply into thick rainforest, where ancient fig trees tower and vines twist like ropes. Black-and-white colobus monkeys swing overhead, and the forest echoes with birdsong. This is Kilimanjaro at its rawest, steep, direct, and wild. By late afternoon, we reach Umbwe Cave Camp, surrounded by moss-draped trees.

Day 2

The path continues steeply upward, emerging from dense forest into heath and moorland. The climb is demanding but breathtaking: the ridge narrows, with deep valleys dropping away on both sides. Strange plants appear—giant groundsels and lobelias stand tall like guardians of the mountain. By late afternoon, we reach the famous Barranco Valley, a magical camp beneath towering cliffs, where the setting sun paints the sky Amber and purple.

Day 3

The day begins with the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble that looks intimidating but is exhilarating to climb. Step by step, hand over rock, you rise up the “Breakfast Wall.” From the top, the world opens into wide alpine vistas. The trail undulates through valleys and ridges, where ravens glide on the wind. By evening, we rest at Karanga Camp, perched above sweeping views, with the southern glaciers gleaming above.

Day 4

A shorter but vital climb, today we move higher into the alpine desert, where life thins and silence deepens. The ground is barren, scattered with volcanic rock. The path is steady, giving your body time to adjust before the summit. By afternoon, we reach Barafu Camp, the high base where summits begin. Tents perch on rocky terraces, and the view stretches forever. Rest early, summit night is only hours away.

Day 5

Just after midnight, under an Open Night sky and canopy of stars, the climb begins. The air is thin and icy, but determination fuels each step. The trail climbs steadily through scree until Stella Point (5,739m), where the first light of dawn breaks across the horizon. From here, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. The glaciers sparkle, the crater rim curves away, and triumph floods your heart.

Day 6
