You will descend into the crater very early in the morning with a packed breakfast in hand. You can decide with your guide whether to spend the full day in the crater or leave in the afternoon.

The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. It formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano erupted and collapsed on itself. The crater is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep, and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles).

Large mammals in the crater include African buffalo (Cape buffalo) and hippopotamus. There are many other ungulates as well: blue wildebeest (about 7,000 estimated in 1994), Grant’s zebra (about 4,000), eland, and Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles (about 3,000). Waterbucks are also present.

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you’ll depart from the camp with a picnic lunchs in hand for game viewing as you head to the north.

The landscape of the Serengeti Plain is extremely varied, ranging from savannah to hilly woodlands and open grasslands. The region’s geographic diversity is influenced by extreme weather conditions, particularly the combination of heat and wind. The diverse habitats may have originated from volcanic activity, which shaped the basic geographic features of the plain by creating mountains and craters in the landscape.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

You will spend the full day game driving around the Northern Serengeti.

The Great Migration is the world’s second-longest overland migration, with a complete route of around 800 km (500 miles). The southern part of the route passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where around half a million wildebeest are born between January and March. By March, at the beginning of the dry season, roughly 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras start migrating north toward the Masai Mara in Kenya, joined by common eland and Thomson’s gazelles. In April and May, the herds pass through the Western Corridor. To reach the Masai Mara, they must cross the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, where thousands of crocodiles wait. For every wildebeest captured by the crocodiles, 50 drown.. When the dry season ends in late October, the migrating herds begin heading back south.
