Sanctuary Safari

Londolozi used to be a camp for big game hunters. It’s an irony that it is now one of the best-managed conservation safari locations in all of Africa.

Based within the legendary Sabi Sands private reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park, Londolozi offers its guests a superb upmarket wildlife viewing package. I love sitting in the back of an open safari vehicle whilst being regaled by a knowledgeable guide, and the guides employed at Londolozi are probably among the best on the continent.

I can’t stress enough how much they bring to the table.

If he wasn’t pointing out a clan of dwarf mongooses popping out of a termite mound like whack-a-moles, he was recounting wildlife stories about everything we saw, be it a small bird, a line of ants, or a tortoise speeding through the undergrowth.

A good guide will open your eyes to all the little things around you, not just the Big Five.

But even though Londolozi is bursting
Read more at the seams with thousands of species of plants and animals, you won’t come away without having your fill of the legendary beasties one always hopes to see.

Lions, rhinos, buffalo, and elephants are all on the menu by the bucketload, and as for the typically elusive leopard, one can expect to spend quality time with numerous habituated individuals. A trip to Londolozi, as pricy as it can be, is nonetheless an unforgettable experience.

The Leopards of Londolozi

Londolozi Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. It is part of Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, which itself forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem. This means that animals are free to roam across an immense, unfenced landscape, creating a sense of unpredictability and genuine wildness. There is never any certainty about what you will encounter, from a solitary leopard resting in a tree to a herd of elephants moving through the bush.

The reserve has a rich history, shaped by the vision of the Varty family, who pioneered leopard habituation in Sabi Sands. Their careful approach to habituating these shy cats has made Sabi Sand world-famous for leopard sightings. This legacy continues today at Londolozi, where encounters with leopards feel intimate and extraordinary.

Londolozi’s accommodation has evolved significantly over the decades. The small rondavel-style units of the early days have been replaced by a selection of five-star luxury

Despite their differences, all lodges provide the same close connection to the bush, combining comfort, elegance, and an immersive wildlife experience. Guests enjoy gourmet dining, attentive service, and game drives led by expert rangers and trackers, who bring the ecosystem to life with their knowledge and skill.

Protector of all living things

The name Londolozi means “Protector of all living things”, and it more than applies to this superb private reserve that forms part of the same complex as MalaMala and Sabi Sands. It is also one of the older reserves in the area, and has been in the same Varty family since it opened in the 1970s. Back then, it offered simple hutted accommodation aimed at down-to-earth bush enthusiasts. Today the accommodation is the ultimate in bush chic, as reflected in it being the African first game reserve in the world to be accorded Relais & Chateaux status. What hasn’t changed is the high quality of guiding, and the superb wildlife viewing. As with neighboring MalaMala, close-up encounters with leopards are the house specialty, but a dull game drive here is a rare thing indeed, as is as guest who walks away without having ticked all of the Big Five.

Leopard Heaven

Londolozi is a small (1,400 hectares) but perfect private reserve in the game-rich woodlands of the Sabi Sands. You can clock up all the Big Five here, but the abundance of cover makes this a leopard heaven. Here beside the Sand River are dense forests, shady dongas (gullies) and lofty marula trees into whose leafy canopies a leopard can safely hoist its kill out of reach of lions and hyenas. Furthermore, Londo’s leopards, although truly wild, have become incredibly well habituated to the presence of tourist vehicles, promising great photos of Africa’s most elusive big cat. Listen out for the moment when the tracker perched on the jump seat of your 4WD whispers the magic word ingwe – Shangaan for leopard – and get your camera ready!

Accommodation comes in the form of six luxurious lodges (all part of the Relais & Chateaux group of elite hotels). My favourite is the Tree House, but all offer a full-on five-star experience. Add breeding herds of elephant and buffalo,
