A beautifully planned family adventure in Rwanda
5/5

My husband, our son and I spent 7 days travelling around Rwanda with Iriza Tours & Safaris, and we’re so glad we finally made the trip happen.

We started in Akagera National Park and spent two nights at Karenge Bush Camp. We’d been on safari in Botswana a couple of years ago, so naturally we found ourselves comparing the two. Botswana definitely has more wildlife, but Akagera has its own charm. Every game drive kept us looking out the windows because you never knew what would appear next. On our first day we managed to see three of the Big Five, and by the second morning we’d found the remaining two, so we were pretty excited to tick off the full Big Five. We also did a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, which was a lovely change from the game drives. Seeing hippos, crocodiles and so many birds from the water gave us a completely different perspective of the park.

After that we headed north to Volcanoes National Park, where we stayed three nights at Ingagi Park View Lodge. I hadn’t expected the weather to be so different. It was much cooler than Akagera, and waking up to mist covering the mountains each morning was beautiful.

The gorilla trek was the reason we booked this trip, and it definitely lived up to everything we’d heard. Seeing the gorillas in the wild is one of those experiences that’s hard to put into words. We also did the Golden Monkey trek, which ended up being so much fun. They’re incredibly quick, playful and impossible to stop watching.

We had a free day between the two treks, which turned out to be a good idea because our legs definitely appreciated the break. We spent that day visiting the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village instead. It was nice to slow the pace a little and learn more about the local culture.

Our last stop was Nyungwe National Park for two nights. If I had to pick one place where I wished we’d stayed longer, it would be Nyungwe. My son and I were excited about the zipline from the moment we booked the trip, and it didn’t disappoint. My husband chose the tea plantation experience while we were up in the trees, and later we all did the canopy walkway together. Walking above the rainforest was probably one of the biggest surprises of the whole holiday.

Before heading back to Kigali for our flight home the next morning, we went chimpanzee trekking. It was the perfect way to finish the trip. We also spotted several other monkey species in Nyungwe, and by the end of the week we’d seen Rwanda’s three iconic primates: mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and chimpanzees. Looking back, that’s something we’re really proud to have experienced in just one trip.

A big thank you to our guide, Pacific. Spending a week together meant we got to know each other well, and he made the long drives enjoyable with stories about Rwanda and plenty of local knowledge. He never rushed us, was always happy to stop whenever we wanted photos, and made sure everything ran smoothly without it ever feeling overly planned.

Everything flowed really well from one destination to the next, and we never had to think about the logistics. We could just enjoy the trip.

If Rwanda has been on your list for a while, I’d absolutely recommend going. It’s a beautiful country, every park offers something completely different, and we’re really happy we chose Iriza Tours & Safaris to organise it for us.

A Perfect 3 Days in Rwanda with the Best Guide
5/5

I did a 3-day gorilla trekking trip in Rwanda with my boyfriend through Iriza Tours & Safaris and it was truly one of the best experiences of my life. From the planning stage to the last day, everything was handled beautifully.

Our driver and guide Sam was absolutely amazing. He was professional, warm, and made us feel completely at ease throughout the whole trip. His knowledge of the area and the wildlife was impressive, and he had a way of making every moment feel special. We could not have asked for a better person to share that experience with.

The gorilla trekking itself was breathtaking and something we will never forget. Getting that close to mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is indescribable, and having Sam guide us through it made it even more memorable.

Everything was well organized, the transfers were smooth, and the accommodation was comfortable and well located. It was clear that Iriza Tours & Safaris genuinely care about giving their guests a great experience, not just ticking boxes.

If you are planning a gorilla trekking trip in Rwanda, book with Iriza Tours & Safaris. Ask for Sam, you will not regret it.
