James Bainbridge

Based in Cape Town, James is the senior author of the Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Berlitz guides to South Africa and Cape Town. Magazine and TV assignments have taken him across Africa from the beaches of the Cape Peninsula to the heights of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, with plenty of stops in parks and reserves along the way.

James moved to the Cape from London in 2010, and one thing he loves about his adopted home is the accessibility of its dramatic landscapes and wildlife viewing; whether you want to see lions in the Kalahari or soaring Drakensberg peaks, you can do it all in a 2WD car. Accompanied by his wife Leigh-Robin and their two kids, he grabs every chance to explore the Western Cape and beyond.
