2-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Tours

4.4/5  –  482 Uganda Reviews

Coming face to face with a Critically Endangered mountain gorilla is one of the greatest experiences you can have on safari, and Uganda is arguably the best place to make this happen. On a 2-day gorilla trekking tour to the country, you’re almost certain to spend an hour with a habituated family of mountain gorillas in one of the two Ugandan parks where this is possible. Uganda is also the only place where an extended four-hour ‘habituation experience’ with the gorillas and led by park rangers can be arranged.

6 Questions About 2-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Tours

Answered by Anthony Ham

Which park or parks can I visit on a 2-day Uganda gorilla trekking tour?

“Two Ugandan parks offer trekking tours to see mountain gorillas – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both of these parks are in the far southwest of Uganda, covering the Virunga Mountains along the country’s borders with Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Although in theory you could visit both parks on a 2-day tour, the cost of permits and the arrangements of getting between the parks means that you will probably only visit one of them. That is more likely to be Bwindi for a number of reasons. Bwindi has around 43% of Africa’s mountain gorillas, including 300 habituated gorillas and 25 family groups. Bwindi is also the only park to offer a four-hour ‘Gorilla Habituation Experience’. In contrast, Mgahinga has only one habituated family of mountain gorillas, although the trekking to see the gorillas is generally a little easier than in Bwindi.”

1

How will I spend each day on a 2-day gorilla trekking tour?

“On the first day, you will travel to the park you are visiting and then sleep overnight, either inside the park or close by. On the next morning, you’ll set out early when temperatures are cooler. You will hike with a guide (porters are also available to carry your backpack) and trek through the forest until you find the gorillas. Sometimes they can be found within the first hour, but it can also take up to five hours if the gorillas are deep in the forest and far from the trailhead. Understand also that this is not easy walking – you will hike through dense forest with steep climbs and descents possible, often in hot and humid conditions.”

2

How many nights are included?

“Most 2-day gorilla trekking tours involve 2 days and 1 night. This means that you will travel to the park on the first day, sleep overnight, hike to see the gorillas on the morning of the second day, and then leave the park and continue your journey on day 2.”

3

Is 2 days enough for a gorilla trekking tour?

“Yes, 2 days is enough. Because of the high cost of obtaining a permit to spend time with the gorillas, most travelers only see the gorillas once, either for an hour or four hours, depending on the park and the tour. In this sense, gorillas trekking is not like other safari experiences, where you might spend hours driving around looking for the animals and have the freedom to come and go as you please. Once you have gone on your trek and seen the gorillas at the allocated time, your time with the gorillas is done. That said, if you are able to add an additional day or two, you’ll be able to enjoy the park, perhaps see other animals, and generally feel less rushed. Having an additional day can, for example, mean that you can relax overnight nearby after your trek, before continuing elsewhere.”

4

What are the chances of seeing mountain gorillas?

“There is an excellent chance that you will see mountain gorillas on your 2-day tour. Although sightings and encounters can never be guaranteed when it comes to seeing animals in the wild, gorilla trekking is a little different from your normal safari. That’s because park rangers travel into the forest in advance of your trek to locate the gorillas. They then radio in their location so that the guides taking tourists through the forest can go to the right place. If the gorillas move, the rangers or guides move with them and let your guide know their latest position. In this way, you can be confident that the trekking through the forest will be worth the effort.”

5

What other animals can I see?

“Which animals you see will depend on which park you visit. If your gorilla tour package takes you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which has more than 460 gorillas to turn your head, there is much more to see. Other possible sightings include chimpanzee, olive baboon, black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkey and L’Hoest’s monkey – the park has 10 primate species in all. In the forest, also watch for bushbuck, forest duikers, the striking Rwenzori three-horned chameleon and incredible birdlife (around 350 recorded species!). The park is also home to around 100 forest elephants, although they’re very difficult to see. If your tour takes you to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you might also be able to squeeze in a trek to see habituated golden monkeys. If you’re lucky as you move through the forest, you might also see bushbuck, buffalo and duiker. Much harder to see but possible are leopard, golden cat, side-striped jackal, giant forest hog, bushpig and elephant. More than 250 different bird species inhabit the park, including lots of endemics.”
