Hiking from Momella Gate (1387m) to Miriakamba Huts (2514m)

Morning pickup from your hotel or the airport and drive toward Arusha National Park, heading straight to the Momella Gate trailhead. The 2.5–3 hour drive offers chances to spot giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife. At the gate, your guide handles entry permits, and an armed ranger joins you for safety. The trek begins through open grasslands where you may again see giraffes and buffaloes nearby. After about 2 hours, you reach Maio Falls, a perfect spot for a picnic break. The trail continues to the iconic Fig Tree Arch. You finish the day at Miriakamba Hut, arriving in time for afternoon tea and snacks. Distance: 10 km. Elevation: 1,387 m to 2,514 m. Hiking time: ~6 hours. Habitat: Grassland & rainforest.

Hiking from Miriakamba Huts (2514m) to Saddle Huts (3570m)

After breakfast, you will climb steep wooden steps as the trail gains altitude, bringing noticeably cooler temperatures. The rainforest is often covered in low-hanging clouds, creating a mystical atmosphere. After about 2 hours of uphill trekking, you will reach the viewpoint Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Back) at 3,200m for a well-deserved break.

From here, the landscape shifts from rainforest to heather and moorland. You’ll continue toward Saddle Huts, arriving around midday. A warm meal will be served, and you will rest early in preparation for your midnight summit attempt.

Saddle Hut (3570m) to Socialist Peak (4565m) to Miriakamba Hut (2514m) Stanning Summit

You’ll wake up just after midnight to begin the challenging ascent to Socialist Peak. Using headlamps, you follow a narrow, steep trail through bushland to Rhino Point (3,821m), then continue carefully along the exposed section toward Cobra Point. After 4–5 hours of climbing, you reach Socialist Peak (4,565m) in time for a stunning sunrise over Kilimanjaro and panoramic views of Mount Meru’s crater and ash cone. You descend along the same route back to Saddle Huts for hot soup and tea, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.

Miriakamba Hut (2514m) to Momella Gate (1387m) scenic drive to arusha

After breakfast, you will begin your descent from Miriakamba Hut toward Momella Gate. An early start offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, as many animals are most active in the morning. Enjoy the peaceful walk through lush rainforest and open grasslands, where you may spot buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, and various bird species.

Upon arrival at Momella Gate, the swahili safari escape vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha, a drive of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
