Visit Mount Entoto for panoramic city views, the Institute of Ethiopian Studies showcasing cultural artifacts, and the National Museum with Lucy’s 3.5-million-year-old remains. Discover Trinity Cathedral, the burial site of imperial family members, adorned with intricate carvings and mosaics. Fly Addis Ababa – Mekele – Gheralta Trek

After an early flight to Mekele, drive approximately 100 km to the base of the majestic Gheralta Mountains. Begin your trek, ascending for 1.5 hours to reach the cliffside Yohannes Maqudi Church, a hidden gem perched dramatically above the valley. Continue trekking 3–4 hours to the 7th-century Abune Abraham Church, known for its vibrant interior paintings. Descend back to the base camp in the village, set under a large shade tree, for a traditional camping experience. Along the way, enjoy stunning landscapes, traditional Tigrayan villages, and insight into local life.

Trekking to Remote Churches & Natural Scenery

After breakfast prepared by your professional cook, continue trekking through the scenic Gheralta Mountains. Pass traditional Tigrayan houses and breathtaking landscapes while making your way to Mariam Papsite Church, perched on a rocky plateau. Explore the church, admire its historic paintings, and learn about the local religious traditions. After the visit, trek for approximately 4 hours back to the village of Korkor, taking in panoramic views of cliffs, valleys, and wildlife. Evening at the village campsite allows for a peaceful night immersed in local culture and mountain serenity.

Return to Mekelle & Departure

Begin early with a trek to the highest point of the Gheralta Mountains at 2,700 meters above sea level, enjoying 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Visit the cliffside churches of Mariam Korkor and Danile Korkor, both adorned with ancient religious art. After a packed lunch atop the mountain, descend to Hawzen village. From there, drive back to Mekele and catch your flight to Addis Ababa. This final day combines challenging trekking, cultural immersion, and awe-inspiring scenery, ending your Gheralta adventure with unforgettable memories of Tigray’s landscapes and historic sites.
