Flight to Semera than Drive to Erta Ale

Early in the morning, depart from Addis Ababa on a domestic flight to Semera. Upon arrival, meet the Afar guide and continue by 4×4 vehicle across vast salt flats and lava landscapes toward Dodom, the base of Erta Ale volcano. At Dodom, mules will carry your luggage while you trek approximately 15 km toward the volcanic ridge. You will reach the crater area late at night, where the fiery glow of the active lava lake lights up the sky, creating an unforgettable experience. Camp on the crater rim under the stars.
Overnight: Camping at Erta Ale.

Erta Ale Lava Lake & Drive to Hamed Ela

In the early morning, explore the Erta Ale lava lake from different viewpoints, observing the constantly shifting molten surface, rising smoke, and glowing magma. After descending from the volcano, drive across the Danakil Depression to Hamed Ela, a remote Afar settlement and gateway to the Dallol region. Along the way, experience dramatic desert scenery, endless salt plains, and camel caravans transporting salt blocks, offering a deep insight into Afar life and traditions.

Explore Dallol & Departure from Mekele

After breakfast, visit Dallol, one of the hottest places on Earth, famous for its colorful mineral terraces, acidic pools, salt formations, and surreal volcanic scenery. Continue to the nearby salt lake to observe traditional salt mining by Afar workers, a practice unchanged for generations. In the afternoon, drive to Mekele Airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of your remarkable Danakil Depression adventure.
