Begin exploring the extraordinary rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, carved entirely from solid volcanic rock in the 12th century and still actively used for worship today. Visit the first group of churches, including:

In the afternoon, continue to the second group of churches, connected by tunnels and trenches, and admire the iconic Bete Giorgis (St. George’s Church), famous for its perfectly shaped cross design.

After breakfast, drive north of Addis Ababa to Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s most important Orthodox Christian monasteries, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot.
Along the way, enjoy scenic highland landscapes and stop at the dramatic Portuguese Bridge, offering breathtaking views over the Jemma River Gorge. You may also spot Gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia.
Explore the monastery church and museum before returning to Addis Ababa in the late afternoon.
