Continuing onward, the landscape opens up dramatically, revealing the vast plains of the Serengeti stretching endlessly to the horizon. The name Serengeti comes from the Kiswahili word meaning “endless plains.” Covering approximately 6,900 square miles (18,000 square kilometers), the park is home to over two million large animals, including more than one million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of plains zebra, and Thomson’s gazelles. This incredible concentration of wildlife attracts major predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, which roam the park in search of prey.
