Guided Nature Walk along the Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Today’s journey takes you from the lowlands up into the Ngorongoro Highlands. The drive from Arusha, the typical safari starting point, takes 4–5 hours depending on your lodge. The reward is a stay on the edge of Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

Stretch your legs with a guided walk along the crater rim. Led by a ranger, this 1–2 hour hike follows a flat trail through lush montane forest. Large animals are rarer here than inside the crater, but watch for tracks, birds, and the bush’s secrets. At the end, enjoy panoramic views over the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.

Check in at your lodge on the crater edge to relax and admire the dramatic landscapes. At 2,286 meters, mornings and evenings can be chilly — bring a warm layer. Early risers can catch a magical sunrise; a slower start offers a breathtaking sunset. In free time, learn about the legendary Grzimek family, pioneers of Tanzanian conservation, in Serengeti Shall Not Die.

Game Drive to Ngorongoro Crater

Today you will visit the legendary Ngorongoro Crater, part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Formed by an ancient volcano, this natural amphitheater is home to an incredible concentration of wildlife, often described as one of the densest in Africa.
After a scenic descent through lush forest, you’ll explore the crater floor, where elephants, buffaloes, zebras, lions and even rare black rhinos can be seen. Most animals remain inside the caldera thanks to its year-round water and grazing.
You’ll enjoy a picnic near Lake Magadi, where hippos rest in the shallows and birds circle overhead. It’s a truly unique safari setting and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
