Arusha / Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate, the main entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park. After registration with park authorities and meeting your professional mountain guides and porters, begin the trek through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, colorful birds, and playful colobus monkeys. The trail gradually climbs through the forest on a well-maintained path, offering a gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro trekking. After about 4–5 hours of hiking, arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720 m). This wooden mountain hut provides dormitory-style accommodation and basic facilities. In the afternoon, climbers may take a short optional walk to the nearby Maundi Crater viewpoint for spectacular scenery. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut while preparing for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro climb.
Day 2
Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and continue trekking toward Horombo Hut (3,720 m). The landscape changes dramatically as you enter the heath and moorland zone, where giant lobelias and senecio plants dominate the scenery. The trail offers impressive views of both Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak, two of the three volcanic cones of Mount Kilimanjaro. The hike takes approximately 5–6 hours at a steady pace, allowing your body to adjust gradually to the increasing altitude. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, climbers can relax and enjoy the stunning mountain environment. This location serves as a popular resting point for both ascending and descending climbers. The open landscape and cooler climate provide a unique alpine atmosphere. After dinner prepared by the mountain crew, spend the night at Horombo Hut as part of your acclimatization process.
Day 3
Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day
Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day
This day is dedicated to altitude acclimatization, an important step to improve summit success and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. After breakfast, take a short acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or the lower slopes of Mawenzi Peak. This gradual climb helps the body adjust to higher elevation while enjoying spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s rugged terrain. After the hike, return to Horombo Hut for lunch and relaxation. Many climbers use this time to rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally for the higher sections of the mountain. The moorland environment around Horombo offers excellent photography opportunities, with dramatic landscapes and expansive views across Tanzania. Dinner and overnight remain at Horombo Hut.
