Day 1
Arrival and Preparation
Arrival and Preparation
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for an essential pre-climb briefing. This day is dedicated to resting after your travels, meeting your lead guide for a gear inspection, and ensuring all necessary trekking permits are finalized. It is a vital time to organize your daypack and discuss the "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) pace that will be crucial for your success on the mountain over the coming week.

Day 2
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
The adventure officially begins with a drive to the Marangu Gate, where you will complete the park registration formalities before entering the lush montane rainforest. The trek to Mandara Hut is a gentle ascent of about 8 kilometers, taking roughly 4 to 5 hours through a dense canopy where you might spot blue monkeys and vibrant birdlife. After reaching the A-frame wooden huts, you can take a short, 15-minute walk to the Maundi Crater for your first expansive views of the Kenyan interior and the towering Kibo peak before settling in for the night.
Day 3
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
On the third day, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone, characterized by giant lobelias and groundsels that dot the rocky landscape. This 12-kilometer trek takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, offering spectacular views of both the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks as you ascend toward the Horombo Hut village at 3,720 meters. This section of the trail is a steady incline, and arriving at the huts early allows your body to begin adjusting to the significantly thinner air at this mid-mountain elevation.
Day 4
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
To maximize your chances of reaching the summit, this day is spent entirely at Horombo Hut for active acclimatization, a critical step in the 7-day itinerary. You will take a short "climb high, sleep low" trek toward the Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi Peak, reaching an altitude of roughly 4,000 meters before descending back to the huts for lunch and rest. This practice triggers the body to produce more red blood cells, helping you cope with the upcoming trek to the high-altitude desert and the final summit push.

Day 5
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The landscape shifts dramatically into a bleak, lunar-like alpine desert as you cross the "Saddle" the wide, flat plateau that connects the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. This 9-kilometer trek takes about 5 to 7 hours and is relatively easy in terms of gradient, but the high altitude makes every step feel much heavier. You will arrive at Kibo Hut, a stone structure situated at the base of the Kibo crater wall, where you will have an early dinner and go to sleep by 7:00 PM to prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 6
Summit Night and Descent to Horombo
Summit Night and Descent to Horombo
Your summit bid begins around midnight with a grueling zigzag ascent up heavy scree toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, eventually reaching Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters just as the sun rises. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos of the glaciers, you will begin a steep descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and a warm meal. The day concludes with a further descent back down to the familiar comforts of Horombo Hut, covering a total of nearly 21 kilometers in a physically demanding but rewarding 12 to 15 hours of trekking.

Day 7
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
The final day is a steady descent through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest, retracing your steps toward the Marangu Gate. This 20-kilometer walk is mostly downhill and takes about 6 hours, allowing you to enjoy the warmer air and thicker oxygen as you celebrate with your mountain crew. Upon reaching the gate, you will sign out of the national park, receive your official gold summit certificate, and be transferred back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower and celebration dinner.
