Mekelle - Erta Ale Volcano

Depart from Mekelle and drive through the Afar lowlands, passing dramatic desert landscapes and small nomadic settlements. After lunch, continue toward the base of Erta Ale, one of the world’s few continuously active volcanoes. In the evening, trek to the crater rim to observe the surreal glow of the volcanic activity from a safe viewing area.
Overnight: Basic campsite near Erta Ale.

Erta Ale - Afdera

Wake up early to see sunrise over the volcanic field, then descend and drive across the desert toward the salt lakes of Afar. Stop at volcanic formations, dried lava fields, and camel caravans. Enjoy a refreshing break at Lake Afdera, where you may swim in the warm, mineral-rich waters.
Overnight: Local guesthouse in Afdera.

Afdera - Dallol & Lake Asale

Drive to the colorful landscapes of Dallol, one of Earth’s lowest points. Explore otherworldly formations, including bright yellow sulfur pools, mineral terraces, and salt chimneys. Visit the traditional salt-mining area, where Afar workers cut and shape salt blocks. End the day at the endless salt flats of Lake Asale, known for its magical sunset reflections.
Overnight: Basic camp in Hamed Ela or Afdera.

Lake Asale - Mekelle - Addis Ababa

After breakfast, explore the striking salt formations and unique landscapes around Lake Asale. Continue your drive through the dramatic desert scenery, stopping along the way for photography and short cultural encounters with local Afar communities.
Arrive in Mekelle in the afternoon, where the tour concludes. Optional onward transfer to Addis Ababa can be arranged depending on your travel schedule.
