4-Day Mount Meru Trekking Expedition

Arusha to Momella Gate (1500m) to Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

After breakfast, you will be met by your Maasailand Adventure guides and crew at Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha for a briefing, followed by a scenic drive to Arusha National Park, where you will complete registration at Momella Gate. You will also meet your armed ranger, who will accompany you throughout the trek for safety due to the presence of wildlife.

Your trek begins across open grasslands, with opportunities to spot giraffes, buffalos and a variety of antelope species. As you continue, the trail gradually enters a lush montane forest, home to colobus monkeys and vibrant birdlife.

The trail gradually ascends through scenic landscapes until you reach Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend your first night, enjoying dinner and resting while surrounded by forest and rich birdlife.

Miriakamba Hut (2500m) to Saddle Hut (3570m)

After breakfast, you will continue your ascent from Miriakamba Hut into the higher slopes of Mount Meru, enjoying views of Mount Meru’s dramatic crater walls and Ash Cone. The trail leads through dense forest before opening into heath and moorland, offering increasingly dramatic views of the crater and surrounding landscapes.

The hike today is shorter but steeper, bringing you to Saddle Hut, nestled below Little Meru. In the afternoon, you may take an optional acclimatisation hike to the summit of Little Meru (3820m) for panoramic views, before returning to Saddle Hut for dinner and rest, ahead of your early summit attempt.

After an early dinner, we will gather you for a pre-summit briefing before preparing our gear for the night ascent, which will begin at 1am (this may be earlier depending on pace).

Saddle Hut (3570m) to Socialist Peak (4566m) to Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

We will start out summit push at around 1am (depending on pace). The summit climb begins in darkness, ascending steep scree to Rhino Point (approximately 3,800m-3,850m). The climb will then continue along a narrow ridge along the crater rim, offering breathtaking views as you approach Socialist Peak in time for sunrise, often with Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance.

After celebrating at the summit, you will descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before descending back through moorland and into the upper forest zone, to Miriakamba Hut. Once you arrive at the camp, you will enjoy an early dinner and your last overnight stay on the mountain, where you can reflect on your successful summit experience.

Miriakamba Hut (2500m) to Momella Gate (1500m) to Arusha

After breakfast, you will begin your final descent through the lush montane forest of Arusha National Park, retracing your route to Momella Gate. On your way, you will enjoy a short, guided walking safari, offering a close-up experience of the surrounding wildlife and flora and sharing insights into the park’s unique ecosystem. This will be followed by a visit to the scenic Mount Meru Waterfall, before reaching the gate, where you will be transferred back to Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha, marking the end of your trekking adventure.
