Along the way, you may spot towering eucalyptus trees, diverse birdlife, and Colobus monkeys in their natural habitat. As you climb, the scenery opens up with stunning views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo in the distance. Along the trail, you may encounter unique alpine plants such as giant lobelias and groundsels, while the increasing altitude may start to affect your body. Very early in the morning (between midnight and 2:00 am), you will begin the final summit push of Mount Kilimanjaro from the high camp, climbing steep scree or snow toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim. From there, you continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where you can take photos to celebrate your achievement. The ascent is done in darkness using headlamps or torches and is extremely cold, requiring full warm gear, with the most demanding section featuring many slow switchbacks. After reaching the summit, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for lunch and rest before descending to Horombo hut. The total journey involves about 6 km up (to 5,895m) and a long descent of about 15 km back to 3,700m through alpine desert terrain.

Horombo Hut to Trailhead
Horombo Hut to Trailhead
After breakfast, you will begin a steady descent from Horombo Hut, passing back through the moorland zone before reaching Mandara Hut. The trek continues through the lush rainforest trail down to Marangu Gate, where conditions can often be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. As you descend to lower elevations, lighter clothing such as shorts and t-shirts will be comfortable, though rain gear and warmer layers should still be kept handy. Upon arrival at the gate, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi, including airport drop-off if required. This marks the end of your trek, with time for celebration and appreciation for the achievement.
