Marangu Route Gate Register, and Begin Trek to Mandara Hut
After departing from Moshi at around 9:00 am, you will take a 45-minute drive through the village of Marangu to Marangu Gate in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, you will register and obtain permits while observing the busy preparations of climbing crews. The trek then begins through lush rainforest trails toward Mandara Hut, gaining elevation from 1,830m to 2,740m. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the region’s flora, fauna, and wildlife. The trail can be muddy and slippery at lower elevations, so mountain boots, gaiters, and trekking poles are strongly recommended.
Day 2
Climb from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Climb from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,740m / 9,000ft to 3,690m / 12,100ft
After a good night’s rest and a hearty breakfast, you will leave the rainforest zone on Mount Kilimanjaro and ascend through heathland, where giant lobelias and groundsels become visible. The trail continues into open moorlands with low shrubs as the main vegetation. A lunch stop along the way offers impressive views of Mawenzi Peak. You will arrive in the late afternoon at Horombo Hut, set beneath the striking views of Kibo Peak. Temperatures begin to drop as you gain altitude.

Elevation: 3,690m / 12,100ft to 4,695m / 15,400ft
After breakfast on Mount Kilimanjaro, you will continue ascending through fading heathland that gradually transforms into an alpine desert “moonscape.” The trail leads you across the vast saddle between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. You will stop for lunch along the way while observing the route you will soon take for your summit attempt. This section offers a final chance to study the climb ahead before reaching high camp in preparation for the ascent.

Climb from Kibo Hut to Summit and Descend to Horombo
Excitement builds as you begin the final summit push on Mount Kilimanjaro between midnight and 2:00 a.m., the most physically and mentally demanding section of the climb. You ascend in switchbacks through cold, dark terrain, focusing on reaching the summit. As dawn approaches, you are rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise, with faster hikers possibly witnessing it near the top.
From here, you continue the final ascent—about one more hour—toward Uhuru Peak, where snow is often present. Upon arrival, you celebrate reaching the highest point in Africa with photos and unforgettable views. After taking in the moment, you begin a steep descent back to Horombo Hut, where you can rest and enjoy tea, coffee, or cocoa before dinner.

Elevation: 3,690m / 12,100ft to 1,830m / 6,000ft
After breakfast on Mount Kilimanjaro, you will take part in a farewell ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew before beginning your descent. You continue down to Mandara Hut for lunch, then proceed through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates.
