Start the day Driving about 380km to northeast toward Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. The scenery gradually becomes more arid and dramatic as you approach the Danakil Depression. Travel deep into the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest places on Earth, departing from Semera. The drive takes you across vast lava fields, black volcanic rock, and shimmering salt flats, with dramatic desert scenery throughout.
En route, stop for about an hour at Lake Afdera, also known as Lake Afrera or Lake Giulietti, is a hypersaline lake in the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia’s Afar Region. Situated more than 100 meters below sea level, it is one of the country’s lowest points and a major center for traditional and industrial salt extraction.
