After an early breakfast, the trek continues as the rainforest gradually gives way to heath and moorland vegetation. Today's trek is relatively short but extremely important for acclimatization. After breakfast, you will cross the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The gradual ascent provides stunning views of Kibo's glaciers and the surrounding mountain wilderness. Day 4

Shira 2 camp – lava tower – barranco camp
Today is one of the most significant acclimatization days on the mountain. The trail ascends steadily toward Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation situated at approximately 4,600 meters above sea level. As you climb higher, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and barren. After spending time at this elevation and enjoying lunch near Lava Tower, you begin a gradual descent into the beautiful Barranco Valley. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy greatly improves acclimatization and increases summit success rates. Arriving at Barranco Camp, you will be surrounded by giant groundsels and breathtaking views of the famous Barranco Wall.

Upon reaching the top, the trail continues through rolling ridges and valleys with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers. The hike then descends into the Karanga Valley before making a final climb to Karanga Camp.
