The park gets its name from the Tarangire River, which is the main source of water for wildlife during the dry season. When other areas become dry, animals migrate in large numbers to the park, creating one of the most impressive wildlife gatherings in East Africa. Elephants, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, buffaloes, and antelopes are commonly seen, along with predators.

Tarangire is especially famous for its elephant herds, which are among the largest in Tanzania. Visitors often witness families of elephants moving together, drinking at the river, or roaming under the shade of ancient baobab trees. These massive trees are a unique feature of the park and give the landscape a dramatic and timeless appearance.
