Your day begins with a short 1-hour scenic flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar. Upon arrival, explore the castles and churches of historic Gondar, founded in 1636 by Emperor Fasiladas. Visit Fasil Ghebbi (the Royal Enclosure), earning Gondar the title "Camelot of Africa," including Fasilides' Castle and Fasilides' Bath once an imperial swimming pool, now used for baptism during Timket (Epiphany) when hundreds immerse themselves in sacred waters. Later, see Debre Birhan Selassie Church, built in the late 18th century, renowned for its beautifully painted walls and ceilings depicting Biblical stories and medieval history. This is a journey through Ethiopia's royal past, blending history, culture, and spirituality.

Today you'll take a short 30-minute scenic flight from Gondar to Lalibela. Upon arrival, visit the rock hewn churches Ethiopia's jewel, hand hewn from solid rock centuries ago and still used by worshippers today. Among them: Bete Amanuel, a 36 foot monolith considered the finest and possibly the royal family's private church; Bete Merkorios, a cave church roughly 1,400 years old; and Bete Giorgis, the most majestic and best preserved, known as the eighth wonder of the world, hewn in the 12th or 13th century. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

In the morning, visit the second group of rock hewn churches in Lalibela: Bete Emanuel (the finest and most impressive, sculpted in classic Axumite style), Bete Mercurios, Bete Abba Libanos (legend says angels built it in one night for Queen Maskal Kebra), the Chapel of Bete Lehem, and Bete Gabriel Rufa'el.
In the afternoon, take an excursion to Asheton Mariam, a 13th century rock hewn monastery about 8 km from Lalibela. You can drive or, for adventure, use a mule. The road is steep and winding but offers beautiful scenery and a rewarding experience—good fitness required.

In the early morning, take an excursion to Nakuto Le'abe Monastery, where King Nakuto Le'abe abdicated in 1270 AD to live as a hermit in a cave. That cave, now a monastery perched on a hillside with sweeping views, remains an active pilgrimage site a peaceful contrast to Lalibela's busier churches. Afterward, transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival at Bole Airport, you'll be met and transferred to your hotel to relax. Later in the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at Yod Abyssinia with a traditional Ethiopian meal and folkloric dance performance.

After breakfast Start at the National Museum, one of Sub-Saharan Africa's most important, home to "Lucy," the 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis skeleton. Next, visit Trinity Cathedral Church, completed in 1942 to commemorate Ethiopia's liberation from Italian occupation, featuring stained glass and mosaics, housing the tombs of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Continue to the Palace Museum (formerly the National Palace), showcasing restored royal rooms and Ethiopian heritage. Then drive through Mercato, Africa's largest open-air market (walking is difficult due to crowding), covering several square miles with 7,100 businesses, primarily selling local agricultural products and coffee.
Depending on your flight time, you'll be transferred to Bole International Airport for your departure flight home, ending your unforgettable Ethiopian journey.
