Day 1

Awash Falls & Doho Lodge

Awash Falls & Doho Lodge

Leave Addis Ababa at around 7:00 AM in a comfortable 4×4 vehicle and travel east through the scenic landscapes of the Great Ethiopian Rift Valley. Along the way, enjoy views of volcanic hills, acacia woodlands, and local villages, with a breakfast or coffee stop in Adama (Nazret). Continue to Awash National Park, Ethiopia's oldest national park, arriving around midday. Your first stop is the spectacular Awash Falls, where the Awash River plunges into a dramatic volcanic gorge surrounded by lush riverine vegetation. The area is an excellent place to observe Nile crocodiles resting along the riverbanks, vervet monkeys, and a variety of birdlife including kingfishers, hornbills, and eagles. After exploring the falls and enjoying the scenery, continue to Doho Lodge and check into your riverside double room. Spend the afternoon relaxing while taking in the tranquil surroundings before enjoying a beautiful sunset over the Awash River, followed by dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.

Search for Beisa oryx, lesser kudu, Soemmerring's gazelles, warthogs, olive baboons, black-backed jackals, and an impressive variety of birds, while Burchell's zebras are often seen grazing on the plains. Continue to the nearby Aledeghi Wildlife Reserve, a vast semi-arid savannah renowned for its rich wildlife and sweeping landscapes. The reserve is one of Ethiopia's best places to observe Grevy's zebras, Beisa oryx, Salt's dik-dik, gerenuk, gazelles, ostriches, and numerous raptors in their natural habitat.
