Arrival & Tigray's Ancient Churches

Upon arrival at Mekelle Airport, meet your guide and begin the journey to the famous Gheralta region. Your first stop is Abreha we Atsbeha Church, one of Ethiopia's oldest rock-hewn churches, traditionally dating to the 4th century. Explore its impressive Axumite architecture, massive stone pillars, beautifully preserved murals, ancient manuscripts, and religious treasures that reflect Ethiopia's early Christian history. After lunch, continue to Abune Abraham Debre Tsion Monastery, dramatically perched on a sandstone cliff. A scenic two-hour round-trip hike leads to this peaceful monastery, dedicated to one of the Nine Saints who introduced monastic traditions to Ethiopia. Enjoy panoramic views across the Gheralta Mountains before witnessing a spectacular sunset. Return to Hawzen for dinner and an overnight stay at Vision Hotel.

Abune Yemata Guh Monastery church, Maryam & Daniel Korkor

After breakfast, drive to the trailhead of Abune Yemata Guh, the most spectacular rock-hewn church in Tigray. The adventure includes about 50 minutes of hiking and climbing along sandstone cliffs before reaching the church, famous for its remarkable medieval frescoes, ancient architecture, and breathtaking views over the Gheralta landscape. After lunch, continue to the trail leading to Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, two impressive cliffside churches reached after a rewarding 1½-hour hike. Maryam Korkor is one of the region's largest churches, while Daniel Korkor offers magnificent views and a tranquil setting. Your camping crew will prepare the campsite on the Korkor Plateau, where you'll enjoy dinner, a campfire, and an unforgettable night beneath the stars.

Sunrise from Korkor Plateau & Wukro Cherkos Church

Trek back down to your vehicle and drive toward Mekelle, stopping to visit Wukro Cherkos, a remarkable 13th-century rock-hewn church carved into a massive sandstone formation.
