Day 1

Leave Addis Ababa early in the morning and drive about two and a half hours into the highlands southwest of the city. As you get closer, the road climbs through farmland and small villages before reaching the rim of Wenchi Crater, an old volcano now filled with a calm blue lake. From the rim, walk or ride a horse down to the lake itself, a fun and scenic way to reach the water. At the lake, take a small boat across to a tiny island where monks live in a simple monastery, and learn about their quiet way of life. Enjoy a picnic or home-cooked lunch by the water, with time to relax, take photos, or even try the natural hot springs nearby. In the afternoon, ride or walk back up to the rim and drive back to Addis Ababa, arriving in the early evening.
