Explore Dallol & the Salt Flats

Depart before sunrise to make the most of the cooler morning temperatures as you journey across the vast salt plains of the Danakil Depression. Today's highlight is Dallol, one of the world's most extraordinary geological sites, famous for its colorful hydrothermal fields, bubbling mineral springs, bright yellow sulfur deposits, green acidic pools, and surreal salt formations. The constantly changing landscape creates one of the most photogenic places on Earth.

Continue to Lake Karum, where endless white salt flats shimmer beneath the desert sun. Here you'll witness the centuries-old tradition of Afar salt miners cutting rectangular salt blocks entirely by hand before loading them onto camel caravans for transport to the Ethiopian highlands. The contrast between the brilliant white salt, colorful mineral deposits, and the harsh desert environment makes this an unforgettable day of exploration. Erta Ale Volcano Expedition

After breakfast, travel across dramatic volcanic landscapes toward Erta Ale, one of the world's few permanently active volcanoes. The route passes vast lava fields created by previous eruptions, offering an incredible glimpse into the geological forces that continue to shape the Afar Rift Valley.

In the late afternoon, begin the guided trek to the summit during the cooler hours of the day. The hike follows a gradual volcanic trail across ancient lava flows before reaching the crater rim after sunset. Here you'll witness the unforgettable sight of the glowing lava lake, an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon visible from the crater's edge. Few places on Earth allow visitors to safely observe an active lava lake, making Erta Ale one of Ethiopia's most remarkable destinations.
